NaPoWriMo: Day 6 – Thirteen Ways of looking at the Rain

Today’s challenge was to write a poem that looks for the same thing in thirteen different ways. The most famous poem of this type was written by Wallace Stevens’ “Thirteen Ways of looking at a Blackbird”.

I have chosen to write on the rain.

I

Rain on the tin roof,

Its beating, It’s pouring,

Soothing and relaxing,

A lullaby,

I close my eyes and dream…

II

On my couch I sit,

In my little cubicle,

Little rivulets on my window,

Of the falling rain.

III

The rains lashed,

Thunder and lightening struck,

The fishing boat rocked,

In the middle of dark blue sea.

IV

In an arid land,

The first drop of rain,

On the creased forehead,

Of an old man.

V

On a dark night,

Two star-crossed lovers met,

Under an umbrella, in the rain.

VI

The rains came and went,

Leaving puddles big and small,

Children screamed in ecstasy,

Paper boats bobbed,

Making ripples big and small.

VII

Birds cowered,

Dogs and Cats too,

Hell hath broken the norm,

Rain, Lightening, Thunder, Storm.

VII

Out in the rain,

In my pink rain shoes,

A hop and skip,

And there I trip.

VIII

Rain drops or Dew Drops,

On grass blades and leaf tops,

Can you tell the difference?

Do you have a preference?

IX

Flowers danced in joy,

Bees and butterflies too,

The heavens were smiling,

Oh Boy! It’s raining.

X

It’s raining, it’s raining,

Soon it will be flooding,

That calls for a holiday,

And time for play.

XI

I will rain, I will pour,

I will destroy that’s for sure,

I am Nature and I am angry,

I will show you no mercy,

Don’t tell me you weren’t warned,

Your brilliant mind will be scorned.

XII

Water Lilies bloom,

Fireflies flit,

Rain drops in the pond,

Egrets wade on…

XIII

Come ye, join the rain dance,

Wear your feathers and your blue beads,

Merrily dance and invite the Gods of rain.
