NaPoWriMo : Day 19 – You Can Reach the Stars – A Creation Myth

National Poetry Writing Challenge Day 19 is to write a poem that recounts a creation myth. It doesn’t have to be an existing creation myth or even recount how all of creation came to be. It could be your own take on the creation of ball-point pens or the discovery of knitting. Your myth can be as big or small as you would like, as serious or silly as you make it.

So here’s mine for today.

Little Robert Hutchings,

Looked up at the sky,

Far beyond the mountains, Oh! So high,

And mused. “How I wish I had wings”,

“Wings to fly…”

“And touch the sky”.

Mrs. Fanny Louise,

Watched her son,

Gaze at the moon, the stars and the sun,

She told him a tale to put him at ease,

A tale of his sisters and brother dear,

A tale he perpetually loved to hear…

There in the skies, at Heaven’s rim,

Where a God, kind and full of love, resided,

To send Little Robert down, He hath decided,

He took back the others to stay with Him,

She said, “They watch you, as stars, from above, you know…”

“Why don’t you find a way to go up there, when you grow?”

So Little Robert worked hard at science,

And made travelling to space his dream, his vision,

Reaching the stars becoming his life’s only mission,

He tested, failed and tested again in defiance,

Then, one day, his prayers, the good God heard,

The first Rocket launched by “The Man, Robert Goddard”.

That’s the story behind the invention,

A lot of fact, some myth and a little fiction,

One truth , of Modern Rocketry, the rightful Father,

Dr. Robert H. Goddard, the dreamer, the inventor.
