NaPoWriMo: Day 26 – PAPER…What’s That?

National Poetry Writing Challenge Day 26 to write a poem based on what future archaeologists, whether human or from alien civilization would make of us. This question should be answered in poetic form, exploring a particular object or place from the point of view of some far-off future scientist. The object could be anything from a coffee mug,  pizza Hut, Pokémon Poster to a cellphone.

Here’s mine for today…2000 years from now!

Do you see this object? said Mr. Kewonsky to his pupils,

All eyes turned on the rectangular cuboid,

“Come closer, so you get a feel”.

“It’s not hard” said one,

“You can open it” said the other,

“And look there’re so many marks on it!”, said a third,

“This is a book, a diary!”, gesticulated Mr Kewonsky,

As the spectators watched at the strange something, in awe,

“What is it for?”, said pupil number one,

“What are those marks?” said pupil number two,

“What does one do with it?” continued pupil number three,

“It was used for writing – feelings and thoughts”, explained the old scientist,

“These marks are the written word”, he declared, the wisdom of a sage,

“Writing?”, “Written word ?”, “How absurd is that?”,

“What happens when you reach the end?”, questioned the geeks

They looked at him incredulously,

“You keep it somewhere to be read again”, remarked Mr. Kewonsky, impatiently,

“Or you bin it”, once you’re done,

“What an utter waste is that?”, said pupil one, with an IQ of 191,

“How was it made?”, said the next bright spark,

“This is made of paper, made from trees!”, said the enlightened teacher,

Now their jaws dropped as they looked, aghast,

In unison, they exclaimed, “Paper from trees!”,

“How cruel is that?”, “How absolutely inhuman?”,

“Kill a living thing for writing!”,

” Feelings they say? Did they know what that was?”

“What kind of creatures were they?”

“These humans of the past… “,

“Why else would they destroy that which giveth life?”,

” Lacking in intelligence”, said Mr. Kewonsky, with a frown,

And they all agreed, absorbing the final analysis in their crown.

Notes taken in their fingers and through an iris scan!
