A regular Monday morning. It’s back to work and back to school. There are a whole lot of things that I want to write about but I’m just too tired. Too tired to sit at a computer and punch the keys. After a whole day at office that requires me to do the same thing (punch keys), it hurts my back and my eyes to stare at the screen again; so much that even the love for writing does not tempt me to get back to the punching.
Strange you’d think because writing is not a job for a writer. It’s what writers love to do. It’s a break from the routine. But when the routine pays you, writing takes a back-seat and one has to ensure one’s is on track in the best of health to manage the routine.
That’s exactly what I was trying to do. The routine was taking a toll on me and I was resting to get back on my feet for another day of routine! So, though my eyes did open at 4.30 a.m., while it was still dark outside, I did not stir. I knew I should be writing. Writing is a practice. The more you write, the more you improve. Just like everything else but I was procrastinating and making excuses. I had even fooled myself that I had written by writing short poetry like haikus and tankas (Japanese Poetry) that I had managed to publish regularly during the last few weeks.
I heard the Azan (Muslim prayers before dawn outside). I closed my eyes and prayed too, thankful for waking up, for family, for health and for a good day ahead. The Azan ended and that meant I needed to finally get out of bed or else the children would be late to school, I wouldn’t be able to go for my morning walk and well, we’d end up in an unnecessary morning rush. Still buying a few more seconds to laze around, I involuntarily, stretched out my hand to check my mobile. It’s not good to look at the mobile screen in the dark (if you’re doing it, please stop) but I was doing it.
No Facebook posts, no whats app messages, no emails, no SMS. The “W” (WordPress icon) showed. That meant someone had either liked one of my posts or my comments or replied to my post or a comment. Seeing that “W” icon never fails to excite me. I was in for a surprise today. There were both likes and comments on my posts. Not just comments that said that the post was great but comments that showed that the reader had actually read each one of the posts. Specific lines that meant a lot to me when I had written a post had been picked up by the Reader and had been commented on. Considering where the reader lived, it must have been the middle of the night or early morning when he must have written those comments. Boy! was I awake! Who was he?
Instead of replying back to his comments, I was curious to read his “About” page and honestly what I got to know about him did not surprise me. His “About” page is as interestingly written as his comments on my blog. A teacher by profession and rightly so, he had just encouraged someone a million miles away to get back to writing. This post is to say a Big Thank you to Milan Rajkumar.
While a writer is supposed to write because he or she wants to write, without really thinking of whether the writing will be liked or read by one or a thousand readers; often a writer does go through a writers’ block or just plain, simple tiredness. It is then readers like Milan who actually make a difference and make a writer, write again. Like Milan did today, there have been others who have been very encouraging like Andrea of Harvesting Hecate and Kamal of Boundless Blessings and Bhavana of Colorful Canvas and Moushmi of Aesthetic Miradh.
To all my followers, readers and the ones who like my posts and who comment, I want to thank each one of you’ll for supporting me in doing something I love doing. Wishing you’ll a great day and a great week ahead!
