When a Reader makes a Writer write

thank you

A regular Monday morning. It’s back to work and back to school. There are a whole lot of things that I want to write about but I’m just too tired. Too tired to sit at a computer and punch the keys. After a whole day at office that requires me to do the same thing (punch keys), it hurts my back and my eyes to stare at the screen again; so much that even the love for writing does not tempt me to get back to the punching.

Strange you’d think because writing is not a job for a writer. It’s what writers love to do. It’s a break from the routine. But when the routine pays you, writing takes a back-seat and one has to ensure one’s is on track in the best of health to manage the routine.

That’s exactly what I was trying to do. The routine was taking a toll on me and I was resting to get back on my feet for another day of routine! So, though my eyes did open at 4.30 a.m., while it was still dark outside, I did not stir. I knew I should be writing. Writing is a practice. The more you write, the more you improve. Just like everything else but I was procrastinating and making excuses. I had even fooled myself that I had written by writing short poetry like haikus and tankas (Japanese Poetry) that I had managed to publish regularly during the last few weeks.

I heard the Azan  (Muslim prayers before dawn outside). I closed my eyes and prayed too, thankful for waking up, for family, for health and for a good day ahead. The Azan ended and that meant I needed to finally get out of bed or else the children would be late to school, I wouldn’t be able to go for my morning walk and well, we’d end up in an unnecessary morning rush. Still buying a few more seconds to laze around, I involuntarily, stretched out my hand to check my mobile. It’s not good to look at the mobile screen in the dark (if you’re doing it, please stop) but I was doing it.

No Facebook posts, no whats app messages, no emails, no SMS. The “W” (WordPress icon) showed. That meant someone had either liked one of my posts or my comments or replied to my post or a comment. Seeing that “W” icon never fails to excite me. I was in for a surprise today. There were both likes and comments on my posts. Not just comments that said that the post was great but comments that showed that the reader had actually read each one of the posts. Specific lines that meant a lot to me when I had written a post had been picked up by the Reader and had been commented on. Considering where the reader lived, it must have been the middle of the night or early morning when he must have written those comments. Boy! was I awake! Who was he?

Instead of replying back to his comments, I was curious to read his “About” page and honestly what I got to know about him did not surprise me. His “About” page is as interestingly written as his comments on my blog. A teacher by profession and rightly so, he had just encouraged someone a million miles away to get back to writing. This post is to say a Big Thank you to Milan Rajkumar.

While a writer is supposed to write because he or she wants to write, without really thinking of whether the writing will be liked or read by one or a thousand readers; often a writer does go through a writers’ block or just plain, simple tiredness. It is then readers like Milan who actually make a difference and make a writer, write again. Like Milan did today, there have been others who have been very encouraging like Andrea of Harvesting Hecate   and Kamal of Boundless Blessings   and Bhavana of Colorful Canvas and Moushmi of Aesthetic Miradh.

To all my followers, readers and the ones who  like my posts and who comment, I want to thank each one of you’ll for supporting me in doing something I love doing. Wishing you’ll a great day and a great week ahead!

Writers so very often make readers smile that it is nice to hear that once in a while the opposite is true.

Doubt is so much a part of writing that there are always times when I think about giving up, but the encouragement of others does help and the WordPress community is great for that encouragement.

Andrea your words are always an encouragement. Its good to know writers like you, also go through doubt. Thank you for sharing how you feel. It helps.

What a wonderful post. The fact of the matter is that as I read the post, I mused how your description of waking and beginning a new day was so powerful. It had the feel of the opening scene of a terrific novel. You, the narrator, became a character, as it were, in what seemed to be a most interesting narrative.

Thanks for posting! Oh, and it’s always good to see a blogger bestowing thanks upon blogger friends. It brings smiles to all our faces! 🙂

      Hello Paul,
First, I’d like to say a ‘big thank you’ to you. Imagining myself as a character in a novel made me smile.😊 It’s the perfect ending to a day that began with a very encouraging comment, which led to this post. I am more than delighted to know that you found the beginning so powerful. Coming from an Academic like yourself, this is a huge boost to my morale. I can only say ‘Thank you’. Your comment means a lot.

Beauty is something wonderful and strange that the artist fashions out of the chaos of the world in the torment of his soul. And when he has made it, it is not given to all to know it. To recognize it you must repeat the adventure of the artist. It is a melody that he sings to you, and to hear it again in your own heart you want knowledge and sensitiveness and imagination. …. It is always in my mind , but today I copied and pasted …

      always love this paragraph .

From “the Moon and Sixpence , Somerset Maugham .

Thank you Milan for sharing this paragraph with us. Its true the reader must relive the adventure again.

Beautifully written and a great tribute to a special reader. I agree that writers are nothing without their readers. All the talk of write for you, not for readers, etc. etc. are all good on paper, but doesn’t always work out. Especially as a writer that is a year old into fiction writing, I value encouragement and honest opinions a lot.

Keep writing. We will keep reading! 🙂

Thank you so much Raja for your comment and your promise to read😊. All the very best on your fiction writing! I hope you achieve success.Totally agree with you…it can be quite depressing if nobody reads or likes your writing but like all blogs on writing tell you, we must continue to write. Readers like the one in my post are silver linings.

Thanks a lot for your wishes, Smitha. If you are a fiction reader, do give my short stories in my blog http://rajawrites.com/index.php/category/short-story/

True, life isn’t always nice to writers. That’s when the persistent writer comes out on top. I also have some readers who are very encouraging so they help me a lot in my journey 🙂 The adrenalin rush that I get from them really makes my day. Cheers.

        1. Smitha V Avatar

I will definitely check out your stories. I hope we are lucky to get that kind of a adrenaline rush every day of our writing life😊

Nice post, writing is a gift, every time you write you give a piece of yourself away, yet you never really run out. A mystery, a mystery, a mystery ….

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Thank you so much😊. I so agree. It’s a blessing from God. There are times when words play mischief and just will not come or the mind just cannot think. So, yes it’s a gift.

I can totally relate, yet there is a river that flows with amazing knowledge, healing, creativity and LIFE. Every writer and psalmist can plunge in! The river of God. :)) Blessings.
