Once there was a lion, really bold,
Followed by jackals and hyenas, eyes slit and hearts cold,
They said they loved him; I am told,
Listen ye’ and listen all, to the tale unfold…
The Lion, he shared his win,
And for years, it made them grin,
Their teeth with pleasure, digging in,
Jackals and Hyenas- They behaved like his kin.
The Lion, went away one day, said he’d come back another day,
Jackals and Hyenas, Oh! they did stay,
Chase, attack, they caught their prey,
Lion! “Who’s that?”, they would soon say.
Then one day, The lion, He returned,
Jackals and Hyenas, their spirits burned,
“The jungle was theirs, He must be shunned”,
“Such a change in hearts?”, The Lion, was stunned.
“Why can we not be King?”, they asked aloud,
“Don’t let Him come. He is too proud!”
The Lion, He came, as he had vowed,
The Jackals and Hyenas, in allegiance bowed.
“The jungle is alive”, the birds chirped, as they soared,
“The King is back!”, they rejoiced, as He roared,
The Jackals and Hyenas, their sorrows they poured,
The Lion, He listened. A King must not be bored!
I wrote the above poem and then wondered why a lion was considered king and not the tiger or the cheetah or the panther. I googled and found this link sums it up the best Why is Lion King?
