I haven’t written in a week. I am simply busy. “But you’re not even working anymore!” I can hear you say. But I am! is the only response I can give while you look at me incredulously.

According to Physics, work is what you do when you exert force on an object causing it to move or be displaced. With all that I’m currently doing, scientifically speaking, I AM WORKING!

As per the English dictionary meaning work is defined as an “activity involving mental or physical effort to achieve a desired result.” So literally too, I AM WORKING!

What you may ask is it that I do or what is it that my work entails?

Now I’m wondering why you would ask me this. It may be either of two things: that you are unaware of what constitutes my work or you choose to live in a fantasy world where you have been taught to believe “work” is one that has a monetary reward. For the benefit of those in the former category, I wish to sincerely explain and for those who belong to the latter, I can only say, the word for “work with monetary reward”, is “JOB”. So, while a ‘JOB” is what I do not have, “Work” is what I definitely do.

Coming back to your earlier question, “What is it that you do?”

Well, here it is – and it’s only the tip of the ice-berg.

 

Educating young minds,   

Rejoicing lost finds,

Conflict resolving,

Listening and advising,

These are a few of my everyday tasks,

 

Cooking and Cleaning,

Training and entertaining…

Repeating instructions,

And watching them executed in small fractions,

Are a few of my everyday tasks…

 

Answering never-ending whys,

Receiving exasperated sighs,

Turning of heads, Rolling of eyes,

Some of the pit-falls of these endless tasks…

 

But when at the end of the day,

On my back I lay,

And my tired eyes do close,

I remember the smiles, the hugs and the kisses,

And then I know, I’ll do it willingly… all over again these everyday tasks.

 

Do you understand why I’m so busy now? Do you agree I’m working? Would you ever call someone who isn’t earning a salary a non-working woman/man, again? For if you do, you know how wrong you’d be, scientifically and literally 🙂 .

    Yes! Only stay-at-home moms seem to understand this. I have been a full time student/working/single mom before…and I must say, being a full-time stay at home mom is definitely the toughest task I have ever encountered!

    Being a stay at home mom is truly the best and hardest job out there. My husband has retinitis pigmentosa in his eyes so he can’t physically work and stays home with me. You would think that it would be a big help but it kind of isn’t. He provides me incredible mental support though. He can’t do much due to the loss of his eyesight so he is kind of like my 4th kid but I love him so much and I’m incredibly grateful for the time I get to spend with him. Thank you for posting, girl!

    Phenomenal post! And I’m not just saying that because I’m a stay at home mom! If I may add, hair stylist, I trim my girls hair and style my kids hair daily for school. Daily. Thanks to a little something called YouTube I’ve learned a few hair styles to do on my girls 😊🙌🏽

    Smitha, it is a fact that I had so much more time for myself during my working days. But since the time I have been home, there is always something to be done. I only wish I were more organized, I am intermittently. I use some of the planning skills from my working days and put my schedule into practice but frankly making this also consumes time!
    This is a job that gives little credit and is mostly taken for granted but the satisfaction at the end of the day is nothing less than that first paycheck.

      Tell me about it Pranitha. I am more occupied now and live by the schedule probably one of the effects of being a slave of the clock. At office, I had to be stuck to the seat when I’d rather be around the place and that was rather stifling. It actually gave me rest and a pay and recognition :). Now, I get hugs, smiles and happy faces. Its definitely not less than a paycheck. So agree with you Pranitha.
