The prompt for the day is based on what Abraham Smith mentions in his interview “ants roll{ing} epic” – a rather charming image! In honor of it, we challenge you today to write a poem in which something big and something small come together. Happy writing!
My poem for today is based on the tiny dot that marks the end of a sentence, the full-stop. In today’s world with social media taking over, where use of abbreviations has become the norm and punctuation is seen more a obstruction, the full-stop is losing its significance or going through a transformation with changing times. As per an article I was reading, usage of a full-stop while texting implies anger. Just goes to show whatever be the case, past or present, the little dot has retained its power over the ages.
Say you find yourself limping to the finish of a wearing workday. You text your girlfriend: “I know we made a reservation for your bday tonight but wouldn’t it be more romantic if we ate in instead?” If she replies,
we could do that
Then you can ring up Papa John’s and order something special. But if she replies,
we could do that. https://www.newstatesman.com/ideas/2013/11/once-full-stop-meant-sentence-was-over-now-it-means-youre-angry
Then you should probably drink a cup of coffee: You’re either going out or you’re eating Papa John’s alone.
Dear Brilliant Minds,
I’m no lame dot
Or an insignificant spot
If you think I’m small
Then, you know nothing at all
To all such men, I say, “Pay Heed, Pay Heed”
Both when you write and when you read
I’m the signal – at which you must STOP
Come to a screeching halt. No further discussion. Make a full stop.
No report, no memo, no abbreviation replete
Without me, no statement complete
A man who is wise
Will not be fooled by my guise
For Position is Power
And I’m the need of the hour
No temporary pause, no further ado
Stop. Period. End of discussion. Take the cue.
Show me respect. I mark finality.
Place me right. Never underestimate my ability
A man could lose his life
Or his lover or his wife
Its not a joke
Or a bad luck stroke
Its I, the difference between a ‘1′ and a ‘i‘
Trust my authority, I speak the truth. I do not lie
Humbly yours
The point (.)
Love Notes gone awry
(a) I would like to tell you that I love you. I can’t stop thinking that you are one of the prettiest women on earth.
(b) I would like to tell you that I love you. I can’t. Stop thinking that you are one of the prettiest women on earth.
