NaPoWriMo 2018: Day 13- Enough!No More.

Today’s challenge is to write a poem in which the words or meaning of a familiar phrase get up-ended. For example, if you chose the phrase “A stitch in time saves nine,” you might reverse that into something like: “a broken thread; I’m late, so many lost.” Or “It’s raining cats and dogs” might prompt the phrase “Snakes and lizards evaporate into the sky.” Those are both rather haunting, strange images, and exploring them could provide you with an equally haunting, strange poem (or a funny one!)

For today’s prompt, I chose the phrase, “This Far.No Further” and will use it as “Enough! No More.” . I write this in the light of the recent happenings all over the world- violence against children and women. The #Metoo campaign sparked a new wave where those who had been assaulted could come out and talk about it and bring the perpetrators of crime to book. But this campaign was for those who survived the ordeal. What about those who lose their life in the process of violence? Do we need to start a new campaign #shetoo or #hetoo so that the criminals are aptly punished? The law needs to be changed, not only in India but all over the world to befittingly punish those who violate other people’s rights. Rapes, acid attacks, molestation, domestic violence are equal to murder and should be treated similarly. An increase in these cases clearly indicates that something’s not working. Too many gray areas allows criminals to escape. We need to have a clear law in black and white.

Growing aversion

Lawmaker’s Inaction,

Enough! No More.

Daily crimes

How many more times?

Increasing animosity

Leader’s insensitivity

Enough! No More.

This far. No further.

Enough. No More.

I wish the lawmakers understood this. I have no words for what’s happening in India. And just feelings for what you have written

In unison with you…I’m also shaken by the brutality not the news and many more…it has made me so numb that I will need few time to write on this issue…and not for any prompt…thanks for writing this…

Thanks Sangbad for your comment. I just couldn’t get it out of my system and this was the best way to get back to some kind of normalcy. It’s reproachable…the entire crime/religion nexus. Wish something is done to stop this.

Stop I think is a matter of fantasy…cure also…actually so many thinks going through my thought process that I cannot speak properly on it…I need a few time to composed my thoughts and sayings…

This is a very good poem, Smitha. Well done.

Thanks Robbie. Its the recent spate of cases in India that triggered it.

    Great one 😊😊👌

Thanks Gourav😊. Something nice came out of pain and disgust.

Absolutely right – time to end all this horrific nonsense. And on a different note, impressed how you manage to rise to the challenge each time – kudos.

Thank you Dahlia. Its very sweet of you. Read the papers and couldn’t think of anything else other than this horrific incident. I’m glad it came out right.

Your poem reminds me of the news that i happened to read this morning as I sat by the pool waiting for my children to finish swimming class. The news stays with me. It is about a young Kashmiri girl who was raped and killed. What was the fault of this poor innocent girl? Was it because she was a girl, born to a family who practiced a religion of their choice?
I wondered if the creatures behind this crime can even be called human. It hurt to know that in spite of all the campaigns, crime is rampant and that too with innocent children as the victims.
This poem has so much meaning and a necessity in this world today.

It was that same news that triggered this poem. Guess, whatever the prompt was, I probably would have diverted it here. Just couldn’t get it out of my mind- people have to be mentally sick to do it and then women protesting that rapists should not be punished. I mean, where is that thing called a conscience.

      1. merrildsmith Avatar

I suspected this might have been what triggered it. But it’s even worse that this is not one isolated incident.

        1. Smitha V Avatar

Yes Merrild. Its distressing and extremely disturbing. It’s like beasts have taken the law in their hands.

      2. thewritewomanblog Avatar

And where is this thing called ‘being human’. It is sad, very very sad. I was telling my sis-in-law yesterday that as a Mother I need to ensure that my son gets the right message, for the least we can do is ensure that he treats the women well as much as I would tell my daughter to take good care of herself.

Do read the poem I wrote 2 days ago ” let every girl be”. It talks about what you just said Pranitha. Thats where the change is required.

So rightly said Smitha,. Enough and no more. There needs to be a stricter enforcement in the implementation of the laws against such crimes, so that these monsters know that they can’t get away with it.

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Absolutely Radhika. Its sickening. And laws have to be stricter while dealing with barbarians. I will not call them animals. That would be a shame to animals.

  9. Feelings and Freedom Avatar

You have touched a very sensitive topic today. It’s disheartening to see and hear news about all the abuse. We can do our bit only by writing about it and raising our voice against the beasts as well as law enforcement.

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Yes Vandana. Read about it this morning in the papers and my heart sank reading about the atrocity. Brutal is not the word. Beasts they are. I wish somebody could do something to fix this.

      1. Feelings and Freedom Avatar

The more we read, the more it hurts. I fail to understand their behaviour 🙁

        1. Smitha V Avatar

          Yes. Unimaginable and ghastly.

  10. Ben Aqiba Avatar

You really like the challenges Smitha 🙂

    Great poem

Thanks Ben. Its more of completing the challenge once its taken up. I really like the comments more😊. And I took this topic because of the a recent tragic event in India.
