Oceans: The Power to Create and Destroy, Shall Return what is Ours!

Wrote this poem for WHPA’s prompt :Ocean based on the current happenings in the world and where I live.

The rains lash the city tirelessly with a vengeance,

And the sky roars and thunders; promises turbulence,

Mountains loom large, watching over the city in stupefied silence,

And the sweeping winds swerve, blowing in hostile defiance…

Raging oceans swell, frothing brown,

Bountiful waves, treasures schlepp, slowing them down,

A legacy bequeathed by every man in city and town,

Receding crests, leave gifts behind, make us frown…

From far and wide, they washed ashore,

In their bosom held, swept at our door,

Not pretty mermaids or jewels of Arabian Nights’ lore,

The surging tides returned to us , so much more…

Oh! Tonnes they gave, the unselfish, magnanimous seas,

Theirs – fish big and small, mammoth whales; was a tease,

And what was ours- plastic, garbage, waste and disease,

The life-giving waters had vouched to bring Man on his knees…

What can I say Sanjana…you’re extremely kind. I accept the claps with a 🙏 and a bow with a bow😊.

There’s a real sense of the power of weather and ocean in this Smitha, contrasting with the destruction humans wreak.

Thank you so much Andrea. This poem was based on the recent happening in Mumbai. Due to the heavy rains and high tide, the sea left a lot of debris on the beaches approximately 3 tonnes. It’s a lesson to all of us to mend our ways.
