Poem 1 Published: I Miss “US”

3 of my poems got published in the Anthology “Men of Mettle,” a few weeks ago. All poems were written from the point of view of men. In a world where feminism is the most talked about subject, this was an opportunity to speak up for the good men out there who also go through their fair share of trouble. The Anthology has been accepted by some universities in India as a reference book for masculinity studies and has some very interesting write-ups by a number of poets and authors. Its available on Amazon Meticulous Men of Mettle

For all the married men out there, let me know if you can relate to it/ if I have done justice to your feelings/if I have been able to put myself in your ‘shoes’ 🙂

I Miss ‘Us’…

By-SMITHA VISHWANATH

My heart skips a beat,

She is getting closer, I hear the sound of her feet,

Twinkling eyes, her voice filled with laughter,

My pulse quickens, my mind’s a flutter,

I feel my blood rise, its love alright…

Two decades on,

She asks where the love has gone-

Immersed in our blooming buds, time has flown,

And she from a girl to a woman has grown,

Motherhood’s made her beam and glow,

And she, busy, had gone with the flow,

While Love waited outside her door,

Watching ardently, weeds and dust it bore

Knocked several times, sincere and hopeful,

And then retreated silently, her hands were full…

She looks up now, a question in her honey-brown eye,

Searches my face, it makes me sigh,

My heart skips a beat,

I see her smile…mellow and wise. Oh! What a treat!

I feel my blood rise, a sense of longing, I missed her alright…

I wouldn’t tell her, I never would…

For it’ll surely hurt her if I should,

She had glided with finesse, through every role,

Our time together had taken the toll,

I missed the days when hand in hand we’d walk,

Without saying a word, she heard me talk,

Every feeling, and every breath she knew,

Then the kids came along and I took the cue,

I had to wait, until she was done,

The closeness, the feelings, and the longing… I had to shun.

This is so very true, Smitha. In many ways it really can’t be helped when children are small, they are so needy, but I am sure the menfolk feel a bit rejected.

It is, isn’t it. Thought it was only the Indian culture or Indian way of parenting that did it. But happy to know it’s universal. Thanks Robbie for sharing how you feel about it.

Thank you so much. Am so glad you could relate. Guess we all go through it…no matter where we are from. I am so happy reading your comment.

Wow, simply amazing Smitha! I think you captured it, the unfortunate truth of being married to being married with children. We must always make time for ‘us.’

Some unsaid emotions that we understand! “Without saying a word, she heard me talk,”…the wow moment! Wonderfully penned. Thanks for sharing.
