NaPoWriMo: Day 6- If only i could, i would

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem of the possible. What does that mean? Well, take a look at these poems by Raena Shirali and Rachel Mennies. Both poems are squarely focused not on what has happened, or what will happen, but on what might happen if the conditions are right. Today, write a poem that emphasizes the power of “if,” of the woulds and coulds and shoulds of the world.

I wasn’t sure what to write about for this prompt. I thought of all the things I’d love to do, if only I could. I wished I could find a way to end disease, to eradicate misery, to roll back time, to know the future. Then I got a call from my dad and I knew what I would really love to do, if only I could.

This poem is for my dad, without whom I wouldn’t be who I am.

If I could make you see the wonder in everyday things
If I could help you move by giving you wings

If I could give you the gift of peace
If I could make your worries cease

If I could help you forget your pain for a while
If I could hand you a key to unleash your smile

I would do what it takes, if only I could
I would if I could because I should

If I could make immortal your beautiful mind
If I could help you unwind

If I could take away your fear
If I could freeze every tear

If I could fill joy in your eyes
If I could make you feel the love of family ties

I would do what it takes, if only I could
I would if I could because I should

I would grant you sweet dreams
I would build bridges over streams

I would wipe away every regret
I would make sure your glory you never forget

I would wave a wand to take away every sorrow
I would grant you the wish of a happier ‘morrow

I would do what it takes, if only I could
I would if I could because I should

For you mean the world to me
And I love you more than you can see

You’re my first reader for this poem :). Felt the love for dad and the poem wrote itself. So happy to see your comment. Day 6 done just in time 🙂
