An Ode to Mumbai City

Received a prompt today to write ‘An ode to a city’
Here’s mine – to the city in which I took my first breath but left soon after, to return after four decades. To Mumbai, where come July 2nd,2019 I will complete a year. And what a year it’s been but more about that in a later post. To all Mumbaikars reading this, let me know if the poem does justice. I know how much the city means to you and truth be told, it has rubbed off on me too.:)

MUMBAI CITY
There’s something in the city
that ticks,
that clicks and makes it different
from all the rest-
‘It’s the pulse,’ they say
Throbbing relentlessly
In the dabbawalas
their tentacles serving
day after day, not stopping
In the local trains
spitting and regurgitating millions
never slowing
There’s a rhythm here, a beat
Never falters
And does not pause
E’en in the dark
It’s the ‘Mumbai magic,’ they say
Touches lastingly
Giving birth to dreams
That enter open windows
unclipped, undeterred
And soar like birds with wings
in the gullies of sprawling slums
and in tall, concrete towers that touch the sky
There’s something in the city
that ticks,
that clicks, makes it different
from all the rest-
‘It’s the air,’ they say
Playful, young and bold
Unfettered by the nitty-gritty
Doesn’t question
Doesn’t interfere
Allows one to be
But comes together as one
When need be
