When she danced

She led

We followed

Matching step to step, beat to beat

Two to the right, two to the left

Two forward, two backwards

Hands in the air, hands on the sides

A few we missed, those in between

While we groaned in pain

Gyrating our girth, shimmying our torso

We did what she did

Her hip fluid

Her feet sliding

Tapping

She lunged

She clapped

she squatted

Making waves in the air, she stretched

While we tried hard to keep pace

And then she turned and I saw her face

Gone was the timid girl I had known

In her place stood a woman

Irrepressible

Indefatigable

A light in her black eyes, a spark

Her smile electric, the torque

Defiant

Exultant

Self-possessed

She swayed

The world her stage

She held the reins, a steady hand

Zumba, Cambia, Samba, Salsa, we didn’t need a band

Instructing, cheering, prodding

She got us, grooving

Gone was the girl I thought I knew

In her place was a woman who ruled by cue

She led

We followed

This poem is dedicated to a friend – the quietest, the sweetest, the most unassuming among my group of friends. So we thought…until she did what she did best, and I saw her – Transformed

I think your friend would be proud to have this tribute to her passion and her strength.

I sent it to her…she loved it. She felt it was so her but had to be told that it was her. She is really the most unassuming. I am sure she must have been happy, probably shed tears too 🙂 but will have to see her face to face to know. It was magical seeing her become this whole new person when she danced.

So happy to read your comment on the poem. Your description was exactly what I hoped to bring out through my writing because that’s exactly what I saw when she danced. So your words feel so good. Thank you so much Robbie.

Thank you so much Kamal. Saw her dancing and just had to write. She read it and said, ‘it’s so me.’ Had to tell her, ‘it’s you’ 😊
