“People are more than what you see.
Do you know that?” he asked
I do, I replied
They are not the face one beholds
Or the trinkets or the garb they adorn
They are not the kindness exuded in their smiles
Or the twinkling laughter reflected in their eyes
“They are also not the words they say,” he added wistfully
“Or the warmth exuded in their touch
They are not the enthralling stories they tell
Or the hand they extend when you fall”
I know that, I interrupted
Agitated, that he thought so little of me-
People are not the secrets they share
Or the advice they bestow on you
I have learnt my lesson!
“That, yes. But there’s more –
What you see is only the tip
Deeper, are their roots; growing entangled,
Fighting their way through hardened crevices, dark corners”
“People are much more than what you see
This you must never forget, ever, again!” he said with a finality
