Lockdown diaries :The Gift…finally done!

Three days’ ago I finally got to down to completing this painting. Ever since I’d seen the picture, I’ve been wanting to do it – for a friend who’s a classical dancer. That was sometime last November. I decided to give it to her on her birthday which falls on Valentine’s day. But in November, February seemed so far away. So, I set the canvas aside to come back to it later. I realized on February 1st that Valentines was just 2 weeks away and I hadn’t ordered the items required to complete the picture. I remained unfrazzled. I had 14 days and that’s a long time as per my standards.

However, I had not accounted for my ‘luck’ when it comes to online shopping. The bells for the anklet arrived on the 5th and they were too huge and shiny. The delivery date for the stone lace said ’13th.’ It was too close. And yet I did not give up hope until it failed to arrive on the 13th. I had no choice but to give up the idea.

So, 13th came and then the 14th – the Birthday was celebrated and the birthday girl was happy. I told myself that at the end that was the goal and it had been achieved – canvas or no canvas.

On the 15th I got busy calling up Amazon for a refund which they processed after 14 days – they needed to check with the store for a week and after a week they needed another call from me.

With the birthday gone, I felt no pressure to place the order again, immediately until the children asked me why the canvas lay there. I shooed them away telling them how busy I was. Then my husband asked me, the day before he was travelling out on work. To remember this before taking a flight, struck me. The incomplete canvas seemed to bother him. I think he read more into it and it worried him that his wife was no longer the ‘completer.’

It wasn’t just the family. The next morning, the maid asked me the same question. It seemed to be bothering her too. With so many people worried, I decided it was time to place the order on Amazon again. Thankfully, on March 9th, the stone lace arrived.

For the ghungroo bells I used my friend for her old, used ghungroos, if she had any which fortunately she did.

Two weeks later with all the things available I had still not touched the painting. I guess there’s a time for everything.

I finally did this last week, the day before the PM announced a lockdown. So it still lies on the easel but its completed and signed and ready to be handed over to the person it was made for.

Note: used an old santa cap for the red cloth and stitched the bells onto it.
