My daughters and I have a tradition that we started a few years’ ago to have our first cup of pumpkin spice latte together. It’s a way to rein in autumn and to celebrate our love for all things autumn. This year, thanks to the pandemic, there’s been no pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. In the absence of the drink, I did this watercolor painting to honor our tradition based on a special request from my younger daughter. This is my first attempt at wet-on-wet. For all non-artists, it means that you first wet the page with your brush and then you apply the paint. This allows the paint to spread easily. What I liked about the technique is that it allows you to complete a painting quickly. The below painting took me approximately an hour.
It was one of those days that I hadn’t done any writing or art or reading. Doing this helped me tick off the box- ‘achieved for today.’ I’m not proud of it but that’s how I’m configured – I need to know that my day has been productive. And by productive, I mean I need something tangible. This very quick painting allowed me to go to bed with a sense of ‘having done.’
