For the love of all things autumn

My daughters and I have a tradition that we started a few years’ ago to have our first cup of pumpkin spice latte together. It’s a way to rein in autumn and to celebrate our love for all things autumn. This year, thanks to the pandemic, there’s been no pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. In the absence of the drink, I did this watercolor painting to honor our tradition based on a special request from my younger daughter. This is my first attempt at wet-on-wet. For all non-artists, it means that you first wet the page with your brush and then you apply the paint. This allows the paint to spread easily. What I liked about the technique is that it allows you to complete a painting quickly. The below painting took me approximately an hour.

It was one of those days that I hadn’t done any writing or art or reading. Doing this helped me tick off the box- ‘achieved for today.’ I’m not proud of it but that’s how I’m configured – I need to know that my day has been productive. And by productive, I mean I need something tangible. This very quick painting allowed me to go to bed with a sense of ‘having done.’

What about you? Do you feel the same way? Let me know in the comments section. And what do you think of the below painting? Have you tried wet-on-wet technique?

Lovely wet on wet work. Sometimes mine gets so soupy and the colors float away and lose their richness. Timing is everything with wet on wet, I guess.

Every time I think I want to stop by Starbucks for a treat, two thoughts stop me. The coffee is fine at home, and the lattes are way too much sugar and calories. The lockdown has been a real money saver for me, and I am also baking more often. This whole thing has gone on so long, I don’t feel any great drive to get out and socialize.

It was my first but I’m sure if I tried landscapes I would have the same problem. These pumpkins were forgiving🙂.
Yes, about the sugar definitely…I feel extremely guilty so I just have cappuccino with no sugar otherwise except for that one cup of latte on account of tradition 😀. But I kind of love the ambience at Starbucks. Dont enjoy the coffee when I take-away.

I’d love to learn baking. About the money saver bit, you’re right. I think the lockdown has helped us in avoiding unnecessary expenses. Its more about experiences now than shopping.
I thought it was just me getting accustomed to ‘not socializing,’ and finding the exercise tiresome.
Thanks Jo for sharing your feelings on the topic.

This is awesome, Smitha and what a beautiful way to paint. Loved it. Traditions that never go away and feels nice and cared.

Thanks so much Kamal. It is a fun way to paint when the results are nice. But I guess it can get challenging too if I try more complex paintings…a possibility of all colors running into each other.
Yes, ‘traditions feel cared for.’ Couldnt have put it better. 🙂

This is a lovely still life, Smitha. I have not really tried to paint. I have my own art forms which I pursue. I always like sculpture, even at school it was my favourite thing to do. I don’t consciously plan to achieve everyday. I just go about what I want to do which usually includes blogging, writing, working and sometimes fondant art or baking. I have goals I work towards but I often find that things take me longer than I expected.

I’m sure you’d excel in whatever you put your heart to. Now I see how the fondant art comes about – from your love for sculpturing…no wonder its so perfect.
Robbie, you achieve anyways whether or not you do it consciously. Its amazing how you manage it all.
Thank you for sharing your creative pursuits here and thank you for always being so encouraging.❤

Thanks Pragalbha 🙂 It’s fun to have traditions- the ones we create as a family. And I’m so glad I was able to teach you something new today. Have a wonderful week!
