Wordless WEDNESDAYS: STANDING STRONG

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel (in white) with red brick roof and the Gateway of India (the stone structure) overlooking the Arabian Sea – picture taken in December 2019

It’s supposed to be ‘wordless’ but not explaining the picture and the caption would not be fair to the iconic structures in the photograph. The ‘Taj’ hotel was attacked on 26th November 2008 and resumed operations on 21st December 2008, true to the undying spirit of the city. The hotel was under siege for 4 days until the 29th November. It was the prime target of terrorists who entered India from Pakistan by crossing the Arabian Sea. 31 people died and 28 were hurt. Of those who died, 11 were hotel employees. The hotel received great praise after the attack for the dedication of the employees. The ‘Organization Culture,’ of the hotel was reviewed by Harvard University post the attack. A total of 166 people across the city and 9 terrorists lost their lives due to the attack. The tenth terrorist who was a Pakistani, was hung in May 2010. The attack is remembered as 26/11. A fortnight from today, it will be twelve years since the ghastly assault.

Thanks for the post. It’s surprising to me that this attack was 12 years ago. It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long.

Thank you Carol for visiting and writing back. You’re so right about it feeling like it was just the other day. I felt like that too and actually rechecked. Its still so fresh in our memory. Maybe because it was shocking like the September 11 attacks on the US it never really goes away.

Its good to hear from you Andrea. Trust you’re doing well.
The attack shook not only the city but the country too – the awareness of how vulnerable we were. Thank you for your kind words.

Very sad what happened in our country, Smitha so many people lost their lives. Even from my company, HPCL that day there was a Parliamentary Committee called in the Hotel and we had one of our Hindi Officers who died and two of them pretended to be dead and luckily they escaped later on. Nice to see our beautiful Taj once again in order and doing well.

Yes Kamal. Its extremely sad and shocking how they could come into the heart of our city in broad daylight. I’m so sorry to know that someone you knew lost their life that day. Its fortunate the other two got away. Each time I see the Taj, I feel a sense of pride and love. There’s something special about it. Thank you Kamal for sharing your experience here. It means a lot to me❤
