ART : Winter Dreams

I finally picked up my brush again after one and a half months. And since I’m not a trained artist, every time there is a gap, I am filled with dread – with art I’m never quite sure if it’s going to work or not. After an earlier failed attempt at painting flowers, I decided to do a winter scene. I finished the watercolor painting in an hour’s time after sunset and this was the result. The next morning when the sun’s rays fell on it, I realized that something was lacking.

Stage 1

I framed and hung it on the wall.

Framed

The next morning when the sun’s rays fell on it, I felt something was missing. So, I reworked on the painting.

And then I worked on it some more and this is the final result. The painting is inspired by Solodov Nikolay’s painting – ‘Winter at sunset in Dolgoprudny’

Though the painting turned out quite well, I realize if I am to feel comfortable with art, I will have to work very hard and allow myself to make mistakes. The latter is something that I’m struggling with.

P.S. I’m working on another painting with flowers. I hope it turns out ok.

I would buy this painting, Smitha. I love the colours. It is the same for me with my artworks. You only see the successes but I sometimes scrunch up my figures because I get frustrated when things go wrong.

Hi Robbie. Thank you! So glad you loved it. If you are seriously want to buy it, do send me an email. Will give you my email id on messenger if you’re interested.
Your comment makes me feel better. Does it hurt to scrunch up your figures? It nags me quite a bit if I have to throw away a painting. I know I need to get over it if I want to improve.

HI Smitha, please do DM me on Facebook. I think it would go nicely with my Africa paintings. When I scrunch up my figurines, I usually stop work for the day, or maybe a few, and then I go back and redo it avoiding my previous mistakes. So I learn from scrunching them up.

I love your work, Smitha. Interesting to see what you added! I can’t imagine being able to do that. If I get caught up on my bills and decide on a theme, or get you a photograph (maybe of my Inukshuk), maybe you’ll paint something big for me someday. Really nice. Multi-talented.

Thank you so much Lynn. I’m sorry I did not reply earlier. I thought I had but I hadn’t. Your comment gives me the reassurance I need from time to time. I’d love to do a painting for you. Do let me know whenever you’re ready. Thank you again…so very much❤

Very nicely done! You shouldn’t be so self-critical. Just let it flow. 🙂

Thank you so much Cendrine for your words of encouragement. I really need to work on letting it flow🙂. I am going to now. Thank you! X

We all learn over time. We are our own worst critics.

I agree with you completely. And I’m working at keeping it in check. Thanks again Cendrine for understanding.

This is so lovely! I always fiddle with my paintings over several sessions. I have not been reading blogs much in the last few weeks while I try to absorb all the information about knee replacements. My tentative surgery date is June 23 and it will be many months of hard work to get normal mobility back after that.

Thank you so very much Jo. Watercolors are so painful and yet I keep going back to them. I hope it gets easier with practice.
Shall pray for you to come back stronger after your knee replacement surgery. Hugs.
