When I am gone

Don't judge my life by the poems I wrote
They are like the waning moon-
Phases that pass,
Like seasons
that come and go.
Like waves that ebb and flow

A few teary monsoons, some harsh winters
cannot take away the many springs and summers
That warmed me and helped me bloom
Remember me by my smile, the way it made my eyes
sparkle and softened my face; Don't look any further

Let the stories I told
of failures, defeats and pitfalls I've had
Not be the measure of the life I led,
It made the highs, so much sweeter.
And those I had many

Don't click your tongues
And shake your heads
Don't frown and say, 'Poor dear'
That would be unfair
To those who loved me - far and near

I had nothing lacking-
I married my best friend
And had children who thought me their world ; I had a sister
who held me so close,I did not feel the distance

And the most loving of parents and that too four- mine and his; when
Some have none
Go give them your sympathy
Not me,
And do no wrong

I had all I wanted and more
A job that I enjoyed,
and art when I chose
I let my heart lead me
And my head guide me.

So,
When you remember me
Think of me as The One-
who lived
and loved by her terms,
And to whom, God was always kind.

P.S. This poem wrote itself. It wasn't for a prompt or as per a plan. The words just took birth in my head and I needed to put it down. It doesn't mean anything except that I am thankful to
God for the journey so far and pray He continues to protect me. Have you ever thought of how you would want to be remembered? Have you scribbled it in a diary or written it as a poem? Please
feel free to share it in the comments below.

Poems that write themselves are the best and the best experience. Most of my poems have come this way 🙂 This is a very beautiful expression that has come through you.

Most of my poems come like that but I have been facing a block since the last two months. So this was a blessing when it came. Thank you so much, Pragalbha for your encouragement always💛

Been away from my desk for months, Smitha, and I feel so lucky to have returned to scrolling my wordpress feed today to find your poem. I don’t want to be remembered for my resume of achievements, or my amateur paintings, or any of that. Like you, I have been blessed with family and I just want my sons to remember how much I loved them.

How beautiful, Joe to want to be remembered only for the love you carry in your heart for your family. I hope you’re feeling well now. How is your knee doing?
It’s good to wake up and find your message here. I had been wondering where you were. Wishing you health and smiles ❤

A masterpiece! Love the opening lines and the imagery of second stanza.

🙏thank you so much for these wonderful words. Your comment rids me of all doubts I had about sharing it. I wasn’t sure how it would be taken.

This is a beautiful stream of consciousness poem, Smitha. I haven’t written a poem quite like this one but I have written a few poems about death which are included in my latest poetry book. I write all my poetry as you describe. I just suddenly get an idea that comes as a fully formed poem, more or less, into my head and I just grab it and write it down. Happy Friday.

Thank you so much Robbie. So glad you liked it and accepted it for what it was. I wasn’t certain about sharing it. The title kept ringing in my head and wouldn’t let go until I put the words down. Most poems are like that for me, like you said. Some others I want to write, the idea is in my head but I just get stuck with putting it in words. Happy weekend to you🙂
