ART: Colors of India

I did this watercolor painting based on a photograph by Hussam Zaki that I found of Pinterest. My second painting from a photograph was challenging yet satisfying once it began taking shape.

You’ll see the painting is different from the kind of pictures you’re used to seeing me paint. But I gather as an artist one must try all kinds of art before settling down to painting a particular subject. So, here it is

Here’s another picture of the same painting

The picture is an image of a lady in Rajasthan- most probably taken during the festival of colors- Holi which celebrates the arrival of Spring. As per the epics, the festival was held to celebrate the victory of good over evil. The festival is celebrated outside India too by the Indian diaspora in the US, UK, Canada, S.Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Suriname and many others.

Lovely paintings! I like how you’ve pulled the color of the clothing into the color of the stairs as well. Beautifully done. Thank you for sharing.

If I had to name the country richest in all the colors of the spectrum, it would be India. I love the richness of the sari colors echoed in what I assume are the colored powders of Holi festivities on the walkway. Well done, Smitha!

Holi is becoming somewhat of a shared festival here in the USA, at some high schools and college campuses.

Thank you so much, Jo. Your appreciation means a lot to me- I’m pushing myself to try painting from photographs though it takes me a longer time and effort to get it right.
I had no idea that Holi was celebrated in school and college campuses there.
And yes, India is full of colors, thanks to the brightly colored clothes (saris and salwar kameez) that people wear.
