Art : Wine and fruit

Its been raining heavily in Mumbai since the last few days. When the rains had stopped for a few days in the first week of August, I grieved thst the end of the monsoons had come. It meant that the weather would go back to being hot and humid again. However, our domestic help informed me that the rains would come back the next week, around Janmashtami (the day on which Lord Krishna was born) and it would continue until Ganesh Chathurthi (the day on which the Elephant God, Ganesha came to earth with his mother). I heard her, but had no idea how she could link the weather to the festivals. She was right though because the rains started just as she had predicted, and have continued ever since; making it difficult to step outside.

With going out becoming a challenge, I’ve been getting more time to paint. My latest artwork is inspired by a painting by the Russian artist , Sergey Alekseev.

I found getting the right shade for the color of the wine and the cherries challenging. But after two days of mixing different proportions of crimson, violet, ultramarine blue for the cherries and crimson and burnt sienna for the wine, I finally think I got it right. In fact, I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. Take a look and let me know what you think. If you have any tips, please feel free to let me know; I’m always open to good advice.

On seeing the painting, my father-in-law commented, ‘Rubaiyat recreated’

This is what he was referring to- a verse by Omar Khayyam, a Persian mathematician, poet, astronomer and philosopher, who died on 4th December, 1131

“Here, with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,

A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse – and Thou

Beside me singing in the Wilderness –

And Wilderness is Paradise enow”

Also, what do you think of the quote ‘ Art is silent poetry’ ? Do you agree with it or not?

Thank you so much, Manja. I’m so glad you think so. I thought people would think a watermelon silly but I truly enjoyed painting it.

I really like this painting, Smitha. I think you nailed the colours. I also have to fiddle around with colours sometimes, especially when I make certain flowers. Art requires patience and practice.

Thank you so much, Robbie. Coming from someone who is an expert at making the most beautiful cakes, that means a lot.
I am realizing it now – that art requires a lot of patience. Thankfully, my mind’s willing to be patient here.

What a lovely still life! I will take a look at my color chart and get back to you because I remember some unlikely combination of two pigments gave me something that looked like Merlot.

And yes, art is poetry silent to the ear but rich in an unspoken visual language.

It was brown madder and cobalt blue that gave me merlot

That would be lovely – if you could let know from your color chart.

Exquisite. Looks as if it were right in front of me. This is poetry. This one is delicious poetry that’s inviting. Love it. Thanks for sharing. Be well.
We’ve had gloomy skies with the occasional sun stealing through for minutes at a time. But it’s been this way since the start of the month. The rain is good rain: cool. (Unlike that of summer) I have no complaints.
    Again. Thanks.

Its good to hear from you again. Its been a long time. Its nice to know that you’re having cool showers there. Today’s been a sunny day after the rains and it’s gotten warm again.
      Warm regards to you 🙂
