What a bummer!

Forgive me for my unparliamentary language but I’m totally sick of what’s happening. I’m sure I speak for every human on the planet ( I do not wish to get into conspiracy theories). Covid’s like a bad movie without an end. We’re stuck in a time-warp- no matter how many steps we take, we are back where we started. Sounds so much like a real-life Marvel series right? This ugly looking virus reeling towards the earth ( that’s how they show it on TV anyway) attacking us, humans. And we, are fighting and fighting, but it keeps coming back. Darn!

Anyway, why am I ranting? I should be used to it by now right? Well, because this is the only place I can. My sister sadly can’t come for Christmas. She had booked her tickets from the US to India via Europe. Europe’s on the list of banned countries, continents. Fortunately, she can cancel her ticket and get the credit back but buying a new ticket will set her back by an additional $ 16 grand. That’s more than ten lakh rupees! And even if she decides to spend that much to see family (which she’s won’t because she is not crazy and neither is she on the Forbes list) there’s the 14-day quarantine Mumbai has imposed on all international travellers. God forbid, if she is positive, she will have to go into institutional quarantine. And even if she’s negative she still has to go through a seven-day home quarantine which isn’t feasible as she needs to see family in different places in India. All in all, it’s not worth the risk.

My younger one though still believes in a Christmas miracle and hopes her aunt will turn up despite everything, just like it happens in the movies revolving around Christmas. Sadly, ever since Covid began, there’s been no miracles. And yet, I know I have a lot to be grateful for.

So, rather than thinking about the negatives, I’m going to focus on the positives. Thanks to Zoom, Fb Messenger and Whatsapp video calls, we can still share in celebrations with families. Ever since the Omicron Virus came out, though the borders have been sealed to a list of 12 countries, we can still travel within the country (fingers crossed, that it remains so). All we need to do is the RT-PCR test even if we’ve taken the vaccine and we need to continue to be overly careful. But at least things are moving within each State- most schools have started from Gr 8 to G 12, malls and restaurants are open and we have the freedom to move around, which we did not have a year earlier. For this and more, I am grateful. Remember, as someone said, ‘You do not attract what you want. You attract what you are.’ So, let’s stay positive no matter what.

I was feeling very flat last week, with new restrictions coming into force again, it was just ‘here we go again’ and I wonder when it will ever end. But I’m lucky – we have a small family in the same country so we can see each other.

I hear UK has increasing number of cases. I’m so sorry for you. I felt exactly the same and the sad bit is that when there is a sliver of hope, I can’t believe it’ll actually work out. This covid’s made me paranoid. Its great you can atleast meet family and friends. Do make the most of it and have a wonderful Christmas ❤.

Selma your sweet message made me smile. Thank you, thank you so much for being so kind and thoughtful. Please consider this a hug. Whoever said ‘Words have the power to heal and motivate’ couldn’t be more right. I’m going to hold on to your words and repeat them to myself and I will dress up…now ( you gave me something to do). Much love and gratitude. Merry Christmas ❤

Aw, that’s too bad. It’s a nightmare almost everywhere and we don’t even know how bad this variant is yet. Yeah, she shouldn’t risk getting stuck in some bureaucratic nightmare or spend all that money. Maybe facetime. Does that work far away?? You have a better mind set than I do. Good for you. 🙂

That’s what I told her. Under the current situation, rules change all the time, so like you said, it’s better not to get stuck in them. I’m trying to maintain the spirit of Christmas for my girls. After a year of no festivity ( after dad’s passing), this was supposed to be the first. Maybe we’ll do just that- FaceTime. Thanks Lynn🙂💕. You are always so appreciative. That in itself is such a wonderful trait. Sending you good wishes and hoping you have a very wonderful Christmas.

While I was not anticipating Omicron, I knew another wave of Covid would hit us around now so we didn’t plan to leave the country. We had planned for a holiday in a remote part of South Africa and that is still currently going ahead. We are having to be ultra careful again and it is, as you say, a bummer.

What you are feeling is universal. I have resigned myself to solitude. maybe now is the time to write that book I’ve been putting off?

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Thank you V J for reading my rant🤗. You know, the worst thing is I think I’ve got used to my solitude. Noise and crowds make me dizzy and exhausted. I don’t know if its age or the effect of being under lockdown.
This is the perfect time to begin your book. I’m working on mine. Keeping fingers crossed it sees the light of day. I wish you luck on your book. Don’t wait any more. Happy writing to you.

Cases rising here since Thanksgiving, and our first local case of omicron. I am travelling from ny to nj by car tomorrow to see my only brother whom I haven’t seen in two years now. I am nervous about meeting him in a restaurant, I haven’t eaten out since the lockdown. I cant bring myself to take a booster after my heart developed a permanent conduction issue less than two weeks after the shot. I am resigned to the fact that this life of relative isolation is my new normal, and I try to make the best of it.

Hello Jo. Its good to hear from you. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your brother.
It’s good you’re avoiding public places. I believe the new variant transmits faster. I hope the ‘conduction issue’ with your heart was temporary and you’re ok now. I know what you mean- we were taking care despite things opening up but we believed that it was behind us with most of the population being vaccinated. So, it was quite a shock when this new variant turned up and countries started closing their borders immediately.

Ahhh, read again your last couple of sentences. 😀 Now it’s not the time to attract the positive. 😉 But yes, of course, I know what you mean. I won’t be going to Slovenia to be with my parents either…

Ha ha…good one. You’re so right. Oh, you’re in the same boat as us- not getting to be with family for Christmas. Its a bummer, isn’t it ? I don’t have the emojis on the laptop but know that your comment made me lol 🙂

I too am tired of this virus, I wish it would go so I could go dancing, carefree, visit friends, not worry every time I feel feverish.
But on the other hand, it made some people realise we couldn’t just keep doing things as we were, we had to be more careful. Unfortunately, not all the logical measures were taken (more means for medical teams in the long run, more care for poorer populations, making sure there is more equality worldwide).

Good luck Smitha, Happy Holidays to you and your family. That son of yours seems very sweet!

I know…tell me about it. Living without a mask seems like a dream now.
India too had a hard time during the second wave- we didn’t close the borders soon enough and before we knew it, thanks to our population, it had spread without control and there was no space or oxygen in the hospitals. We learnt our lesson and now we’ve proactively banned countries. I just hope all countries can prevent a repeat and things can back to what it was prior to Omicron, if not prior to Covid.
Thank you dear Dawn for your holiday wishes. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas too. XXX
P.S I have two girls, no sons 🙂

I read your last sentence and am chuckling to myself. I’m in bed with a fever, just went to see the doctor today, awaiting results of my PNR test tomorrow, my dog is driving me crazy, but that’s only because I don’t have the strength to go walk him, and I misgendered your child. I’m sorry!
As you can tell, everything is going great in my life at the minute (and that was just the very superficial bit…except for your daughter of course!). Hope you are well!XO

        1. Smitha V Avatar

Oh! I hope there’s no cause for worry and you’re feeling better now.
It’s perfectly fine, Dawn😊. Don’t worry about it. You take care of yourself and hope you have a wonderful rest of the month and the year. Hugs.💕
