It’s that time of the year again when people like me start churning poetry, almost like machines – one each day. And yet, unlike machines, these are customised to the prompts given on the NaPoWriMo site.
Without further ado, here’s the prompt for today
Today, I’d like to challenge you to do the same! Here are a few lines of Dickinson’s that might appeal to you (the slashes indicate line breaks):
- “Forever might be short”
- “The absence of the Witch does not / Invalidate the spell”
- “If to be ‘Elder’ – mean most pain – / I’m old enough, today”
- “The second half of joy / Is shorter than the first”
- “To be a Flower is profound / Responsibility
I have chosen the line – ‘To be a Flower is profound’ to write a poem on
I have oft wondered how it is to be a flower- soft as a baby's skin as tender and as vulnerable And yet shouldering such weight - as to beget or bear the burden of extinction To be a flower is profound responsibility- like a mother's; Only much more. For no sooner does it wake up and turn its face up to the firmament It must be prepared to serve not one But every guest that comes to it And it must show no difference A flower, as patient as a monk and generous, as God himself Makes me think that to be a flower, must mean, 'To be His chosen one' For who is more gracious, more sweet, More unassuming, More giving And most celebrated than a dainty bloom? Excellent Smitha! You’ve really thought deeply about what it means to be a flower and the result is a poem full of wisdom – while also having its amusing moments, such as having to serve everyone!

So glad you liked it, Andrea. ‘Thank you for taking the time to read the poem.
To serve everyone,’ is something that comes to my mind each time I see bees and butterflies hovering over flowers. I was happy to be able to use it in a poem, this time. I’m so pleased you pointed it out.

I especially like this stanza:
“It must be prepared
to serve not one
But every guest
that comes to it
And it must show no difference”
