NaPoWriMo Day 15 – Mold of Envy

Finally, here’s our daily (optional) prompt. This one may seem counter-intuitive, but today I’d like to challenge you to write a poem about something you have absolutely no interest in. This isn’t quite the same, I think, as something you’re indifferent to. For example, I have absolutely no interest in investment strategy. Anytime anyone tries to tell me about it, I want to put my fingers in my ears and go “lalalalalala.” My brain tries to shut down! This is honestly kind of funny, and I think this prompt has value precisely because it invites you to investigate some of the “why” behind resolutely not giving two hoots about something.

Crib, crib, crib all day
Whine and complain
Play the same refrain-
How all the world's a monster
And your life's a disaster
Of others, you say,' They're all so lucky!'

And I'm thinking, 'Oh,please!
She's got to be kidding'
Just then, you look at me
And repeat, 'You have it all. You're so lucky'

How is that fair?
You know I've had my share.
What kind of friend doesn't understand?
It isn't obvious beforehand-
The mold of envy creeps in stealthily
Pulling downwards, like gravity.

Blinding, like harsh sun's rays.
If only you'd change your ways
This thing you feel, makes my gut churn
And my skin burn.

My ears go buzzing
I feel my system shutting
And, you say it again, "You're so lucky"
With a flicker of misery in your eyes that say, "Why not me?"
And I think 'Seriously!
How can one be so self-centred, not to see?'

My mind warns, 'Keep her at bay.'
'Stay away.'

Jealousy is the worst. Some people just don’t have gratitude towards anything. I loved it….just stay away

True, Vineetha. I feel sorry for such people who fail to see all that they’ve been blessed with because they’re so busy counting other people’s blessings. Thank you dear for reading and writing back.

An unusual take Smitha. And I like that bit about you have it all. It is exasperating.

Sonia, thank you so much for taking the time to read. It’s comments like yours that keeps me going. This should keep me going for the next half 💛 🙂. Cribbers can be a handful.

I find this an interesting take on the prompt Smitha, you come at it from a different angle than just trying to think of something you’re not interested in, by exploring someone who isn’t interested in anything but herself! You describe that envy very lyrically.

Thank you, dear Andrea. I was at a loss of words or creativity yesterday. So, your comment is like the dose of inspiration I desperately needed. Thank you for not failing to read and pepping me on the NaPoWriMo journey. I’m extremely grateful.

Manja, I need to recharge my batteries and it’s only the 15th! Don’t know if it’s the heat here or the prompts. Thank you for reading 💛

Jealousy is one of the worse of all human emotions, Smitha. It is responsible for a lot of bad feeling in our world. An excellent poem.

Robbie, first, thank you, for not failing to read and write back. It’s very encouraging, especially when one’s feeling drained.
Yes, jealousy is hard to be around…its ungrateful and feeds on meanness. It makes it very difficult to be around. I believe in ‘Live and let live’. I’m so glad you liked the way the poem turned out, Robbie.
