NaPoWriMo Day 26 – Indian April

Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that contains at least one of a different kind of simile – an epic simile. Also known as Homeric similes, these are basically extended similes that develop over multiple lines. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they have mainly been used in epic poems, typically as decorative elements that emphasize the dramatic nature of the subject (see, by way of illustration, this example from Milton’s Paradise Lost). But you could write a complete poem that is just one lengthy, epic simile, relying on the surprising comparison of unlike things to carry the poem across.

Mine for today is based on, one epic simile.

Indian April's like a furnace-
a tunnel brick kiln,
with a continuous fire burning,
a stream of hot air blowing
and sealed
on all sides
with no option to escape,
but remain stationary or move forward
as it gets warmer and warmer,
until the last bit of moisture
is sucked out from
every 'green' brick;
making it harder,
and stronger
so there's no cracking
during May's 'firing'.

P.S. We had the coldest and the longest winter this year
and we waited for summer to come to thaw our bones
and to melt our frozen blood. Summer came as promised
and we thawed all right. But, it's so much more hotter
than the previous years and it's toasting everything in sight.
The Meterological department has stated that this
is the hottest April in a decade.

You’ve really captured a sense of unbearable heat Smitha, I like the way you’ve used the imagery of the kiln all the way through, including the ‘no cracking’ from the firing.

It’s sweltering here, Andrea. It’s crazy hot. And I’m happy you felt it all the way in the UK through this poem :). Ah yes…you noticed the ‘no cracking’ 🧡

This is very good, Smitha. Do you find you get into the swing of thinking up a poem a day to a prompt? Does it get easier as you go along? I would think it would. The more I write of a specific style of poem, the easier the writing becomes which is why I ask.

Thanks so much,Robbie. So glad I could share the summer here with you.
The prompts can be a little challenging sometimes but I do realize that I speak in poetry by the end of the month😀. I mean it seriously- every line that drops out of my mouth rhymes in some way🙂. Like you said, if it was one style of poetry, it would get easier.

The weather here is wacky to say the least, and while I would love the warmth, we need some rain too.. else we are settling in for another year of drought here in California.. But you perfectly summed up the Indian summer to what it is today (based on all my family has been telling me…)

Oh! Drought would mean more forest-fire, right? I hope you get some rain.
Thank you Vidya for reading the poem and writing back🙂. It’s good to know that you’re aware of the Summer here and think the poem did justice. I’m happy to have connected with you this NaPoWriMo.

Ahhh, sorry to hear this, Smitha. 🙁 Strange is getting stranger…

It is strange and I’m waiting for the rains. Again, I hope it’s regular and does not come in torrents.

It is unusually hot. But then they always say this…hottest in xyz decades. You got this summer perfectly.

I agree, Sonia. But it is extremely hot this time. Generally,it gets hot in May, here. But it’s been like this since the beginning of April, this time.

I needed the heat of your evocative Indian April to warm me up on a chilly but sunny day!

I would love to send some your way, Kim🙂. I know how much I waited for it, when it was cold here ( not close to the kind of cold on your side of the globe), but now, I’ve had enough🙂. Thank you for your lovely comment on the poem.
