NaPoWriMo Day 27 – Adapting

“Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a “duplex.” A “duplex” is a variation on the sonnet, developed by the poet Jericho Brown. Here’s one of his first “Duplex” poems, and here is a duplex written by the poet I.S. Jones. Like a typical sonnet, a duplex has fourteen lines. It’s organized into seven, two-line stanzas. The second line of the first stanza is echoed by (but not identical to) the first line of the second stanza, the second line of the second stanza is echoed by (but not identical to) the first line of the third stanza, and so on. The last line of the poem is the same as the first.”

I wasn’t sure what to do with this prompt and I just began writing. But I loved how it turned out. Would love to know what you think.

I'm great at adapting
It's what happens when you move schools.

I moved ten schools and that's what happened-
I got comfortable meeting new people and shifting homes

You get comfortable with moving homes and with new experiences;
You learn to laugh easily, talk and make friends.

I learned to laugh, make small talk, and friends, easily .
It's meeting the old and the pain resurfacing, that scares me.

Old memories scare me and the pain, the past brings with it.
I'm used to forgetting and being forgotten.

Forgetting and being forgotten takes time to get used to
No matter what, everybody wants to be remembered, in a good way.

Remembering the good, no matter what, isn't what everybody does.
I'm great at adapting.

I have read all the comments on this post and obviously it has resonated and stirred the inner feelings of all. For me it is a philosophy of life. Adapting is accepting the reality of change. It is like a river which meanders its way around adapting to the realities of the landscape before finally merging with the ocean. Yes adapting is learning. A very deep and philosophical poem expressed in very simple way.

Thank you for reading and writing back. It’s a pleasure to read your perspective on the poem. I especially like that you see it as a ‘deep and philosophical poem expressed in a very simple way.’ Yes, adapting is ‘like a river which meanders its way’. Thank you for a beautiful comment.

This is positive and sad at the same time Smitha, it obviously comes from a deep place and the emotion runs deeper as the poem goes on.

Thank you, dear Andrea. Your analysis of the poem is perfect- it does come from a deep place. And I’m glad to let it out.

  3. […] I am not linking their blogs here. This year’s NaPoWriMo was all the more special because my poem, ‘Adapting’ got featured. Last, but, not the least, I leave you with this beautiful […]

Smitha, I also spent my childhood in a series of schools. Leaving my friends after the third grade was very traumatic. After that, I was reluctant to get close to anyone again. As a minister’s daughter, I interacted with others as I was expected to do at a fairly superficial level, knowing nothing would last. I have written about that experience and will post it later.

Your well-written poem brought back a lot of memories. How much more positive your response was! I wish I could have adapted as you did! <3

Cheryl, I’m sorry I took so long to reply but I’ve been having trouble with my site.
It’s wonderful to know the poem resonated with you and that you too changed schools. I suppose that’s one reason it’s so easy to talk to you. I understand what you’re saying about speaking superficially. I suppose that’s what we think we are doing because we are so used to adapting. But, that’s not how others around us see it. I know that for sure.
I’m looking forward to reading your post dear Cheryl. I’m so glad we met and you shared your experience with me. The important thing is you made it through and you’re able to look back and talk about it. Sending you a warm hug and love❤️.

Well done, Smitha. I moved schools 14 times in 12 years so I can relate to this. I think it makes your friendships a bit transitional.

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Omg, Robbie, we found another thing in common between us. No wonder we connect so well:)… or just one of the many reasons, we feel the same way about a number of things.
‘Transitional’- that’s the perfect way to describe the relationships made.
Thank you for your appreciation of the poem,Robbie🧡

Congratulations on being featured, Smitha! I’m just catching up with my reading and I’m so glad to read your poem. I’ve had to move around a lot as well and I recognize bits of my experience in this piece. I love this line in particular: “I’m used to forgetting and being forgotten.” Just wonderful.💜🍃

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Thank you so much, Romana:) I’m so glad you liked the poem and in some ways you could relate to it. Only a person has moved will understand that the poem is not sad. It’s just the way it is. X

Honest, deep and true. Well done for being featured. “Forgetting and being forgotten takes time to get used to.” Ahhhh!!

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Thank you, dear Manja. I’m delighted that the poem got featured. It’s one of those thoughts that had been brewing in my mind since a long time but hadn’t known how to express it. When I did yesterday, I was pretty pleased. XXX

  11. Sonia Dogra Avatar

Congratulations Smitha. There’s an underlying pathos in this duplex that comes across beautifully.

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Thank you so much, Sonia. I’m so glad you liked how it turned out. Have you moved schools?

      1. Sonia Dogra Avatar

No Smitha. I was lucky, should I say that? Hard to define really. My children have moved schools, so many of them. I don’t know what’s better. The latter is tougher though.

        1. Smitha V Avatar

I thought so :). Because you said ‘pathos’. It isn’t bad, honestly. It changes you and it’s just what it is- you get great at adapting. You’ll see the difference when your children are older and you’ll see they turned out just fine. Both have their merits and demerits. I’m so glad we had this conversation, Sonia. It breaks the walls.

    Congratulations Smitha:)

    So well deserved.

This duplex hits home at so many points. This: “I’m used to forgetting and being forgotten.” reads like a tag line for a memoir.

You nailed it. I discovered I adapt to change easily, but taking the risk of actually confronting is hard.
