NaPoWriMo Day 29 – The Gift

“And here’s our prompt. In certain versions of the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty, various fairies or witches are invited to a princess’s christening, and bring her gifts. One fairy/witch, however, is not invited, and in revenge for the insult, lays a curse on the princess. Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem in which you muse on the gifts you received at birth — whether they are actual presents, like a teddy bear, or talents – like a good singing voice – or circumstances – like a kind older brother, as well as a “curse” you’ve lived with (your grandmother’s insistence on giving you a new and completely creepy porcelain doll for every birthday, a bad singing voice, etc.). I hope you find this to be an inspiring avenue for poetic and self-exploration.”

Writing a shape poem is tough. I tried one yesterday as per the prompt and someone said, the hands I drew looked like a butterfly. I had to agree; my daughter had told me the same. Anyway, today, I decided to
do a shape poem for the prompt provided below. The shape is the shape of the gift I received when I was born that pretty much sealed my future. Here’s my poem, ‘The Gift’

Thanks, Robbie for asking though. Please do let me know if there’s anything else that’s missing, if it comes to your notice. Twitter is the only thing I removed consciously.

This is lovely, Smitha. I’ve never tried to write a poem in a shape. PS
Your Twitter share button seems to have vanished.

Thank you, Robbie. The story in the poem is true :).
I got rid of twitter for the time being as I don’t find it very useful.

You did great with the shape, but what a wonderful story – how romantic!

🙂…it’s true and something I’ve wanted to talk about. This prompt provided me with the opportunity to. Thank you for appreciating the shape and the story.

Oh, Selma, we’ve reached the end. How I’m looking forward to catching up on reading and art again 🙂 Thank you so much for such a lovely comment. The story is true :). It’s what my dad told me after I was married. And I had been meaning to document it. This seemed the perfect prompt to do it. XOXO Big, big hug.

That’s a good one, seems an easy way to make the shape. I may try doing that for my yesterday’s cat. But not until Monday.

Thanks so much, Jim. Looking forward to seeing your cat :)…Monday it is. I guess we all need a break after a crazy but fun month of poetry.

This is an intriguing tale. You have mastered the crib shape and complements the poem greatly.

Thanks so much Gloria. I’m glad to hear that the crib came right. I’m not great at doing shape poems but I felt, it needed to be done for this poem. I’m happy to know you feel the same.

Harmony, you’re so kind. It means it looked like what it was supposed to and you could read the poem. Thank you so much. XXX
