Waiting- the antonym for ‘living’

Have you ever given it a thought-

Why it takes so long for rice to cook,
or for milk to boil
when you're waiting?
Why does rice get overcooked
and milk boil over
when you've turned away
for what seems like no more than a moment?
Why does a journey sometime feel like forever
And why does it feel like it only just began
though the distance is fixed?

Have you ever given it a thought-

Why do minutes seem like hours
and hours like days
when waiting for the result of something
You think your life depends on? Does it really now?
Why does a month seem like a fortnight
and why does a week pass by
in the blink of an eye
when you're doing what you enjoy,
or you're with people you love
when time is a constant?

'Kay Sera, Sera, what will be, will be.'
Haven't you heard, 'The future is not ours to see?'
Let then the future take it's course
Tomorrow, may be better
or it may be worse
But, today - it's what's real, it's here,
It's what ours.
How can we let it slip like sand between our fingers- worrying?
Why waste it -
waiting?

HI Smitha, your poem is lovely and powerful, and one I can relate to having had that waiting experience as well. I found you through Robbie’s blog, and I’m glad all is well. ❤️

Hi Lauren, thank you for stopping by and your kind words. I’m happy to meet you and very much appreciate you taking the time to write back. I suppose only one who has gone through it or seen their loved one go through it, can truly understand.
I’m glad it ended well too🙂. Thank you again❤️.

We’ve all been there with the waiting. Apparently the poet parlayed energy she was temped to spend worrying on penning a relatable poem. This is lovely!

  7. […] Fellow blogger and poet, Smitha Vishwanath, wrote a lovely poem about waiting. At the time of writing, she was waiting for the results of medical tests which have subsequently come back and alleviated her anxiety. Hi Smitha, I can really identify with this post. I have waited for biopsy results twice myself and once for my son, Michael, and once for my mother. My mother’s result came back malignant and she fought breast cancer for two years. I read your more recent post first so I know you’ve now had your answer. I am so glad all is well.

Hi Robbie…another thing we now have in common. I waited for my mom’s too and hers was malignant as well. Thank God your mom is fine now. The waiting must have been terrible during Michael’s time. It’s a wake up call and all we can do is live the best life we can- do good, live good and trust in God.
I’m very glad it turned out well for both of us. May God be with you❤️
