Art : Moor

It’s been ten days since my last post. I try my best to write once a week and I have been successful so far. However, I’ve been down with the flu since my last post. I’m much better now but while it lasted, it was bad- my nose was like a clogged drain and no amount of steaming helped; my head ached and painkillers made no impact. After popping in pills like candies for the cold, fever and headache for 6 days, I woke up on the sixth, feeling much better. During this time, the only thing I could do was paint, albeit with a stiff neck. Staring at any screen: television or computer, made my eyes sting. Apparently, the flu is in the air in Mumbai. Everybody I know has either had it in the recent past or is going through it and there are so many different forms of it: Covid tops the list followed closely by Influenza B and Swine flu.

Anyway, here’s a painting I did during this time:

I wasn’t happy with it, so, I did not name it. But, I could not rest until I had done another painting- one, from which I would learn something. I’d been meaning to paint boats and do a landscape painting using minimum colour. This painting I saw somewhere on the net helped me achieve both my goals. I call this painting, ‘Moor’

‘Moor’ is a watercolour painting marking the end of tumultuous July. It is a reminder to stay still and anchor yourself every once in a while.

I would love to know what you think of the artwork. Also, how do you spend your time unwell- are you able to rest and do nothing, or do you feel restless and need to engage in a calming activity to heal? Do write back. I’d love to know.

Like all my art posts, I end this one too with a quote from a famous artist.

Hi Smitha, it sounds like you’ve had Covid. The headaches and exhaustion are very bad with Covid. I love Moor, it is a favourite picture of mine.

Hi Robbie. Oh! Is it? I had no idea why the painkillers had no effect on the headache.
I’m very pleased to know you liked ‘Moor’. I enjoyed painting it- there’s a lightness to the painting.

Moor is certainly a very uplifting painting. Covid gave me headaches and terrible backaches which painkillers did little to ease. A horrible illness.

I agree, it was horrible. I’m not sure where I caught it though as I have been wearing my mask regularly. Maybe when we went to a restaurant to celebrate the good news on the medical report. I’m very careful now to keep my mask on in public places though noone wears it here.

Sorry to hear about the flu but glad you’re feeling better now. While I like the painting you did while ill I agree that ‘Moor’ is a better one – more atmosphere, more to make you linger over it. You have a real talent!

I’m much better now, Sarah, though the fatigue continues. I’m so glad to know you liked ‘Moor’ too . I love how you describe it :). Thank you so much.XXX
P.S. I just got to know, we are moving to Dhaka 🙂 by the beginning of October.

Sorry to hear you have been down with a flu. I love the idea of your moored painting and it is lovely to look at. I tend to be moored at home, happy after the years of business travel. If I am running around out and about too much, I need at least one or two “at home” days to recover.

I found the long recovery from surgery last year very frustrating. In the beginning, there was a lot of fatigue so naps were frequent. After a few weeks, I was still resting with my leg elevated and wrapped in a cuff that circulate ice water for many hours that I was awake. I watched TV and did a lot of colored pencil sketching. Later, I tried to paint small things on a tray in bed or on the tray of my walker. I spent a lot of time online and I read a lot on my kindle–nothing too heavy in the reading department.
I have never had the flu and when I have a cold (rarely), I force myself to get up out of bed, and I even do some cardio exercise to get my body temp up and get my blood circulating.

I hope that you will soon be feeling back to normal!

Hi Jo, I’m feeling much better now, thank you! I’m so happy to know you liked ‘Moor’. I remember you doing a lot of paintings after your knee surgery. I think you did quilting too, though I’m not sure if it was before or after. I just remember admiring your work. The healing process after the surgery sounds painful (with your leg propped up with ice water circulating. Have you healed completely now? Are you able to walk around comfortably?
I get a cold generally twice a year- when the season changes but, this time, it was bad. A blogger friend tells me it could have been covid since the headaches were terrible and remained unaffected by painkillers.
Your painting process has never failed to inspire me. Knowing that you exercise when you catch a cold, to heal, is equally inspiring. I think I’ll try it the next time. Thank you Jo for reading and writing back. It’s always lovely hearing from you. Hugs.

Hi Smitha. Your artwork is gorgeous, what a talent to be able to write and paint. Yes, every once in awhile, we must regroup and anchor in life. I do hope you are soon on the mend <3

Hi Debby . Thank you so much for appreciating the artwork. I began painting during Covid- it actually saved me during the lockdown and helped me heal through my losses.
I am feeling much better now. Thank you for asking, Debbie. I agree, it is important to anchor yourself, every once in a while to find our bearings. Hugs.

Good to hear you’re on the mend Smitha. But what??? Your artwork doesn’t look like you only began in the last two years! <3

Hi Smitha. I’m glad you’re doing better. I know what you mean. I can’t think straight when I don’t feel well. Thanks for sharing these lovely paintings. I particularly enjoyed the boats. Hugs on the wing.

Hi Teagan, It’s very satisfying to know you liked the boats 🙂 Thank you for reading and sharing how you feel when you’re ill. It is hard to think straight with an aching head and a stuffy nose 🙂 Hugs.

This viral flu is everywhere and all are getting it in some kind or another. Good you have recovered. Nice drawings too Smitha 💖

Thanks so much, Kamal. I’m wearing the mask even though its not mandatory. It’s very tiring to be ill. Love to you.

Yes I completely understand Smitha. Always welcome dear. Love to you too 😊

I adore both your paintings! The colors are so calming and beautiful.

When I’m sick I can’t do anything…so I usually end up picking a TV show I’ve been meaning to watch and binging it as if my life depended on it. As a result, I now have certain shows that I associate with different recoveries in my life. Weird, but it works for me.

Oh, and if I have high fevers, I write down those crazy dreams because sometimes story ideas lurk in there somewhere.

Thanks so much, Bridgette for your appreciation of the painting and for writing back.
Lol…your comment made me smile. You watching TV when you’re sick sounds so much like my younger daughter. I guess we need to do whatever works for us.
Writing those crazy dreams during fevers is a great idea- that’s being productive even when all odds are set against you. I think I’ll do that next time. Fingers crossed next time isn’t too soon though :). Thank you for taking your time to write back. I appreciate it very much. XXX
