Thankful Thursday 2 : Joy of Giving

This week I’m feeling very thankful.

First, my daughter was finally able to donate her hair to cancer patients. She’s been trimming it and getting split ends removed so that her hair is healthy. That’s one of the criteria other than the fact that it should be a minimum of 12″ long and should not be treated. After 4 long years, her hair was finally long enough to be donated. The purpose of sharing it here is to create awareness. I know many would love to do it- some don’t because they do not know the rules while others are not blessed with long hair. For all those who do not know how to go about it, please note that the hair should not be treated and a minimum 12″ is required. It should be plaited and sent to the donation centre. The hair should not fall on the floor while being cut.

Secondly, I’m very glad for the opportunity of selling my art to charity. Someone, who I barely know shared a message about a charity event and asked if I would like to participate. The money collected was to be used for providing hearing aids to underprivileged children with severe hearing difficulties and also towards cancer treatment for those with financial difficulties. The deal was that if the paintings sold, the money would go to charity and if they didn’t sell, the paintings would be returned. 27 artists donated 90 paintings for the cause. I donated 9 of my paintings for the cause and I am very happy to share that all the below 9 paintings, worth Rs 47,500.00 sold. The best thing is that most of these paintings ( 5 of them) have found their way to homes where I know they will be truly loved.

Art is something that came to me during covid- I hadn’t planned on continuing it or ever dreamed that I could make a difference in someone’s life through it. But, the money that I have earned from it and the joy I get doing it are immeasurable. It’s an amazing feeling to walk into someone’s home and see my art up on their wall. I’m thankful that I got to take part in this charity just before I leave this city of dreams, after spending four amazing years here. I can’t help but feel it’s nothing short of a miracle- all of it.

That’s all for this week. How has your week been? What are you thankful for? Do share in your comments or join the blog hop (Link below).

Hi Smitha, it is wonderful that you could sell your pictures for charity. I have raffled cakes and gingerbread houses for charity before and it is nice to put artwork to a worthy cause. Congratulations to your daughter. She must feel strange with her hair so much shorter. I cut 15 centimeters off mine recently and I am glad to be free of the length, to be honest.

Hi Robbie, yes it was wonderful. If the paintings didn’t sell, then it wouldn’t have served the purpose.
I remember you making gift boxes for charity on Christmas and I think I read about your charity drives in one of your author interview posts.
She did feel strange for the first 30 minutes but now she is fine. Only, she does not want to be clicked. Lol. I thought she’d feel so much lighter after the haircut and like you, would have been happy to be free of it.
Can we do the zoom call next weekend?

Hi Smitha, yes, that will be fine. Mumbai is 3 hrs and 30 minutes ahead of SA. Email me some suitable days and times for you and I’ll sort it out with my diary.

Thank you for your kind, appreciative words, Kamal. This is Smitha🙂, not Cindy.
It felt good doing it and I’m just happy people bought the paintings because if they hadn’t, I wouldn’t have been able to help. Thank you again for the love💕🧡

What a great idea, selling art for charity! If I were shopping among your paintings I would have bought Mountain Mist or A Walk with Friends 🙂 And kudos to your daughter too for donating her hair!

Thanks Sarah🙂. I was very excited too when I heard about it. Mountain Mist and a Walk with friends was bought by 2 of my oldest friends ( one from college days and the other from my first job). I get the kind of artwork you like from the ones you picked🙂. Do check out my website to see if anything else catches your fancy.
On the first day, my daughter wasn’t top happy with her haircut but, now, after a month, she’s loving how easy it is to wash her hair now😀.

Art for charity, what a great idea! I have a drawerful of watercolors that I could give away for charity….I will try to find something like that here. Did you mat and frame everything first?

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Hi Jo, that sounds lovely. People are more keen to buy it when its for a good cause and they’re getting something in return.
A few of my paintings were framed. The rest I got framed after they found buyers- the buyers paid for the framing. I know a person here who does the framing quickly, so that was easy. You can select a charity that you want to help, share your paintings with the community around you and tell them what the money will be used for. Wishing you the very best😊❤️
