Thursday Doors: Dhaka’s beautiful doors (1)

This is my first post in what I hope will be a series of posts on doors in Dhaka. People here believe in investing in doors. Doors here represent their purpose in every way – enormous in size, made of solid wood (teak and mahogany from Burma and Chittagong) or metal with security cameras and uniformed security. While it does sound rather intimidating, it isn’t, because entrance arches and high compound walls have bougainvillaea or creepers growing over them that are allowed to fall over these doors adding a softness to these otherwise daunting structures.

I managed to take pictures on our first walk around the neighbourhood. I had to skip taking pictures of doors where the security guards looked at me questioningly and my hubby refused to be involved if I ended up getting caught. But, I’m hoping that after a few months here, the guards will get used to seeing my face and will be less suspicious of me. Here are the first ones that I managed to take. Let me know what you think of these doors.

Door to a villa- many apartments in Dhaka have doors like these

The entire compound wall and this gate had spikes on them. If not for the white flowers growing on the side, it would seem rather unwelcoming.

I liked this white door with all the green around it

I love how this black, metal door with all its carving, looks against this coffee-brown compound wall

I found this pretty creative.

Hi Smitha, is there a big crime problem in Dhaka? South Africa also looks like this with beautiful wrought-iron that are quite intimidating. Ours often have spikes on top or an electric fence.

Hi Robbie, I think the security has been beefed up after the 2016 terrorist attacks here. I had no idea that S.Africa had similar kind of intimidating gates with spikes. I haven’t seen any here with an electric fence. Some of them are really beautiful though.

Very nice gates. Intriguing to wonder what’s beyond.

Thanks Brenda for visiting. I can only imagine beautiful homes lie beyond as the landscaping here is done with a great deal of taste.

I’m glad you enjoyed seeing them, Cheryl. It’s been a week since we moved in. I’m getting there :). Today is better than yesterday. I could finally write a post and reply to messages. Thank you for asking. XXX

Oh, lovely, a great start of the series. I like the most the last thought and the last gate. Just please, don’t get arrested!

Hey Manja, it’s so good to finally see you here. I think I’ll stay away from this lane filled with embassies and check other safer areas to photograph. Thank you for writing back. XXX

Hmm, I find them rather intimidating. They are well-constructed, yes, but to me they say ‘stay out, visitors aren’t welcome’. I like a door that seems to invite me to look inside! Still, I’ll look forward to seeing more in this series 😀

Agreed…they are :). Expecially with the security outside.Lol! That’s what my husband says, ‘what don’t you understand?’
Ha ha… for you, I will click away cautiously. How is your Nepal holiday going?

Having a fantastic time, thanks 😃 But not that long to go now, sadly.

I like that they’ve all done their best to make the entrance gates attractive. That colorful one at the end is my favorite, but they all show great craftsmanship and creativity. I look forward to the series (and I don’t blame your husband – be careful).

I will, Dan 🙂 but Thursday doors is too hard to resist. I love the community you’ve built. Thank you again.
