Art: Imperfectly perfect

This is my second oil painting. I call it ‘Imperfectly perfect’ – the image is inspired by a painting I saw on Pinterest.

With this painting done, I want to go back to drawing and shading. I think it’s important every once in a while ( once a year or 6 months) to practice sketching and to go over the lessons you’ve learned along the way just so you can avoid mistakes. Who knows what you will learn the second time around?

Once I’m done with that, I want to do watercolours or acrylics as it’s faster than oils, which take forever to do. I know the proponents of oil painting will disagree with me and argue that nothing can beat the feel of an oil painting. I agree. Oil painting is also very forgiving. You can paint over and over without worrying. In fact, layering only adds to the beauty of a piece (I realized this with this piece which I did once and then redid all over again). But, that said, the time involved in waiting for the canvas to dry before you add a new layer ( if you don’t want the colours to mix), all the hard work involved in cleaning brushes and the smell of distilled turpentine, is enough for me to want to take a break from it. I’ll try not to take too long a break because I have a lot of starting trouble. My break which begins with a week can quickly extend to a month or more because the white canvas or paper still frightens me.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s the painting I did.

And here’s a video of the painting with some music added :). Wishing all of you a beautiful Sunday!

This is so beautiful. I’ve never tried to paint. I don’t even remember drawing much as a child. In fact, I don’t remember drawing at all. I’m wondering what if I try now … I don’t even know if I know how to do it!

Thank you so much. If you haven’t, then maybe you should this year. You never know until you’ve tried, and there are so many different kinds. If you’re the super organized kind, then Mandala and pointillism may be your thing, but, like me, if you don’t like restrictions, then try watercolors, oil, or acrylics. Trust me, you can. 🙂

Thanks Smitha. I have a book of mandala art. Let me start with it.

Thank you so much, Debbie. I’m so happy to know you liked it. I especially enjoyed doing the table cloth. It’s so English, isn’t it? 😊. Hugs to you too❤️

I’m not always a big fan of still life works but this is lovely – the textures, the green background to the flowers, the sheen on the vase – beautiful!

Hi Sarah, Thank you! It’s nice to know that you like it despite you not being a fan of still life. I do still life every once in a while to practice drawing… which is super important for me as I don’t measure or follow scale. It’s a limitation on my side, and I’m not proud of it.

The way you contrasted the textures here gives a lovely result, well done! I meant to reply to your previous post, it seemed a bit melancholy and I have been feeling the same. I hope this painting process and the park to walk in have lifted your spirits. I know that art projects and a walk in the midday sun (too cold here for morning walks) are helping me.

Oh Jo, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been feeling the same as I have been. I’m fighting it setting daily ‘to do’ lists for myself. Painting is definitely helping, and so is the daily exercise. Thank you for your kind appreciation of the painting and for reading my previous post ( I wondered if you’d seen it). Thank God for blogging and wonderful people like you who cheer me on and inspire me with their work. Hope this feeling passes by us just like the season❤️🤗.

Winter blues, I had forgotten my vitamin d supplement for a while and my mood is better now that I am on it again.
We are hiding from concurrent covid, flu and another respiratory virus so we are living the covid life again. Our online relationships are so important!

Ah… that makes sense. I suppose I must have a problem too internally. I feel better now after taking a week of progesterone (as prescribed by the doctor). I will be traveling to India for Christmas and will have minor procedure to ensure a regular supply of the hormone in my body. I hope that keeps me from feeling as low as I did.

So light and delicate, Smitha! Beautiful painting. <3 You motivate me to attempt some watercolor paintings again. I am my own worst critic and usually see only the flaws in my work! 🙂

Thank you so much, dear Cheryl. Well, I hope I motivated you enough to begin in 2023 🙂. You can see from my paintings that you don’t need to stop just because you think it’s not perfect. If you enjoy doing it,please do. Nobody’s assessing you. Happy painting again❤️
