Published: 3 poems in Thieving Magpies

I am very pleased to share three of my poems published in the Chicago-based digital literary magazine, in their Winter issue on their 5th Anniversary. Since it is a quarterly issue and their standards for publication are pretty high, it feels very good getting accepted. If you’d like to check out the magazine, click here.

I’ve shared below a few verses/lines from each of the poems-

The Expat wife
She’s the accompaniment—
The spicy, sweet, tangy dip…

I wish I were a boat
I am a kite
Floating upwards- farther, and farther away
Toward the Kármán line.

Between homes

I’m not an explorer
in search of a spark to ignite my soul
Nor am I an immigrant looking for another man’s soil
to crystallize my dreams; I am a shadow
I follow

About the poems: They are based on my feelings as an expatriate during my first month in Dhaka. Those who have been following my blog will very well know what the poems would be about. However, I request you to give it a read and let me know what you think about the poetry and if you have ever felt like this.

Well done. Your poems reflect your feeling right now. I’m an expat and it took me about 2 tears to finally feel comfortable in my new surroundings. The first 6 months were very difficult. Not being with friends and family was the hardest.

Thank you so much, Darlene for reading. It feels good to know from you that it’s only normal to feel like this and that I need to give myself time to settle down. I hope I feel settled in 6 months. 2 years feels too long.

Yes, you do need to give it time. By 6 months I was feeling settled but it took 2 years (for me) to feel really settled. Now I feel out of my comfort zone when I go back home for a visit!

Three very good poems, Smitha. I have been an expat, although my experiences were very different from yours, but I can relate what you write to some other expats I knew.

Thank you so much,Mick. Your appreciation of the poems means a lot. Although sad, it’s good to know that you find it relatable.

Hi Smitha, I can’t seem to log in to leave a comment on the originating site. I read your three poems and they are all very moving and beautiful. I am sorry you are finding it hard to settle into your new home and country. I think it is because your girls have gone and your family life is now different. Hang in there, it will get better. Hugs.

Hi Robbie, I’m not sure how one can leave comments on the site. Thank you for reading the poems and appreciating them. I agree…there’s just been too many changes I’ve had to deal with along with my health issue ( the one I had told you of, I had a problem again. But, I have got it fixed this time in India. Hopefully, it’s okay now). Thanks to friends like you, I managed to hang in there. Thank you for being there in spirit❤️. Hope Michael’s doing well now. I hope 2023 is kinder. Happy New Year to you and your lovely family.

HI Smitha, I hope that 2023 will bring you better health and an expansion of your circle of acquaintances in your new home. Life is full of changes and they aren’t always easy to deal with. Michael is, thankfully, doing well and is due to start school on the 11th of January.
