Dhaka Diaries: A walk in the park and some exciting news

I’m overly grateful to have a park close to home. It provides me with a safe walking place and it’s just the right amount of quiet. Spread over a sufficiently large area, with a lake in the centre that is used for swimming, it has a badminton court, basketball court, cycling and walking tracks, a coffee shop (three weeks old), a coconut vendor just outside the park, exercise machines, children play area with a jungle gym, swings and even a small zip line.

The nice thing about this park is that it has an open area which can be booked for gatherings. Two weekends ago, there was a banner outside the park which said, there was going to be a book launch. I wanted to go for it but I didn’t. It was held at 3 p.m. on a Friday afternoon and after a late Thursday night, I couldn’t resist the temptation of a nap; I found the idea of dressing up for the launch, tedious. So, I missed it. I hate that I did- it would have been a wonderful experience to see how they do book launches here, in Bangladesh. Also, if you go sometime during the day, you’ll invariably catch a young couple dressed to the hilt in finery, doing a wedding photoshoot. Thanks to the park, I’ve witnessed 5 Bangladeshi couples in their wedding outfits, faces fully made up and hair elegantly done, without going for a wedding.

The new book store

With so many other things I was doing, I hadn’t managed to go to the park for three days and I desperately wanted to know if the store had opened. So, on Friday morning (first day of the weekend), I got the family out of bed for a walk around the park. All those who read my previous post, would know that I have been looking forward to finding out what store it was going to be. Looking at the shelves in the glass enclosure, I had hoped it would be a book cafe. I had even dreamed of sitting around in the mornings with a book there, and reading to kids in the evenings, if they let me.

Imagine my delight on seeing the board say, “Book Worm’. I thought my dream had come true. However, while it does have books in it, it turns out it isn’t a book cafe or a library. It’s a book store. I suppose this is not too bad either- I can still get the books I want to read without the need to wander too far from home. And maybe, if I get to know the storekeeper, then I can also order the books I want, through him or her if the store does not already have it. There I go dreaming again.

To be fair, the dream I had, of a coffee shop and a book shop did materialise, even if not to the ‘T’. Lesson learnt: next time, be clearer when making a wish; God needs specifics too.

For all those who reached this far of my post, I have an exciting piece of news to share. I finally got a publisher for my first novel. I am as excited as I am nervous. I have the usual apprehensions that all new authors have- how will the book look when it comes out, will people like the book cover (I haven’t finalized it yet), will it prompt them to pick it up and once they do, will they like the story, my writing. The doubts and fears are neverending and yet, here I am- waiting for it to happen. Wish me luck, dear friends. I will give you more information over the coming days. Stay with me.

Cheers,

I’m writing this post for Jo’s Monday Walk challenge.

First, congratulations on receiving the great news of finding a publisher for your first novel. What a fantastic feeling this must be, and wishing you the best and looking forward to updates on this news. It is nice you break the information with your walk in the park; the one thing I have always valued is an area to escape to every now and then – and think. In larger cities, it is more difficult to find such places, but when you do, it can be bliss. Also, in regards to the bookstore about to open up and your “dreaming again…” why not see if you can open up a little coffee shop there 🙂 You can name it after your novel! It is great to read from you again, Smitha, and I look forward to your book when it comes out. Take care.

Thank you so much, Randall, for your good wishes and for saying you look forward to my book. It means very much to me. I hope you enjoy reading it. The publisher’s news filled me with excitement and nervousness as well… you know, thinking the book was actually going to be seen by someone other than me.
Dhaka’s parks are full of life. With little else to do, the park is a hub of cultural events here. And yet, it’s quiet enough. I know what you mean about escaping the noise. The garden attached to the community we stay at,in Mumbai, was an escape from a city that never sleeps.
About opening a coffee shop🙂, I’ve always had a dream of opening a book shop (like Meg Ryan’s in ‘You’ve got mail’ and reading to kids. Thought I could do it here, but I gave up the idea, seeing it was a bookstore. Your suggestion makes me think I should give it a try.
Thanks, Randall, for writing back. You take care too🙂.

HI Smitha, the bookstore looks very upmarket and beautiful. Lots of books. How exciting that you have a publisher for your book. Are you designing your own cover or are you giving input into the design? I’ve done some of mine myself, and others where designed by a third party. Either way it is lots of fun.

Hi Robbie, I realized only later that it is upmarket. A lot happens there, apparently.
I’ve been giving input into the design. It’s still going back and forth. I’m not sure if the problem is with me or the designer. Lol. But, I hope we finalize something soon.

So the dream is coming true soon, the first book. I am sure there will be many more. It’s natural to feel apprehensive but keep all that aside and you will enjoy that moment of happiness which you will cherish. Congratulations and all the best.

Thank you, dear Lynn, for your encouraging words always. It means very much to me.❤️🙏
It feels unreal still as the book’s been on hold for a year…it feels like forever. The publisher is not a bigwig. They’re in India and are fairly new, but I got good reviews of them. I’m hoping they deliver as promised. I’m keeping my fingers 🤞

Congratulations, that’s such exciting news!! And of course I mean the publisher, not the book shop, although that’s great too. Imagine, one day your novel could be for sale on a shelf inside that very shop 😯

Thank you, Sarah😊🤗. The book and I have gone through so much since its inception that I still find it hard to believe that it’s happening. Maybe, when I hold it in my hand, it will seep in.
I did not dare to imagine my book being on display there, but reading your words makes me want to imagine (and hopefully, manifest it)💕🙂. Hugs.

Thank you so much, Mick🙂. It took a year to finally get a publisher. It makes it hard to believe it’s finally happening.
The park’s my haunt now. You can never feel lonely there, with so much happening around.

Wow! That IS exciting news! I’m so sorry to have lost touch with with you but I do wish you the very best of luck with the book. I’ll look out for it. It looks a big book store. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see your book displayed in the window, a local authoress!
