Published: The Gift of a Poem

P.C. Spillwords Press

I’m very happy to say that my poem, ‘The Gift of a Poem’, has been published by SpillWords Press today.

Today is my younger one’s birthday, and Spillwords very kindly agreed to publish the poem today. It meant a lot to me, especially since she’s been asking me why I haven’t written her a poem after she left for University, six months on Valentine’s Day and somehow, I couldn’t write a poem for her. It wasn’t that I did not write poems; I did. In fact, I wrote 60 in April itself for NaPoWriMo. And each time, Akanksha would remind me that I hadn’t written one for her yet and that I loved the older one more because I had written her a poem the week after she had left home for the first time.

Here’s an excerpt of the poem, I wrote for my younger one. To read the entire poem, you can click here .

On your first birthday
Away
From home
I gift you this poem
And I pray each verse
Envelopes you like summer’s warm embrace
The kind I’d give you if you were here.

I’m trying hard to string the words together

This is very beautiful, Smitha. I’ve finished you book and will get my review done soon. Michael is in hospital again so life’s a bit upside down again 😞

A lovely poem to your daughter, Smitha! After those mischievous, attention-seeking little rascals move out, we are forever missing them, longing to see them, and hoping to hear from them! 🙂

Oh, Smitha, I can feel it all. I can picture my mother in your place and imagine her looking over the sea in my direction, as she often says she does, not just on my birthday, which you know was yesterday. She says she cannot write poems any more since my father was in the hospital with Covid and pneumonia. He is okay, but she got scared. And yet she still sent me some funny wordplay with my name. It is not easy with mothers whose children are far. What a beautiful, heartfelt poem. Happy birthday to your daughter.

Manja, what a beautiful comment. Thank you for sharing it from a daughter’s side. You understand well. It’s so lovely that she sent you the wordplay. That’s cute and mom-like😍.
Thank you for the birthday wishes. I passed them on to Akanksha. And she says, ‘Thank you’.
P.S. when is your mom’s bday. I remember she is a Gemini but forgot the date.

Haha! You remember well. 🙂 It’s June 10th. You’re most welcome, Smitha and Akanksha. Unless you count the dog, I can only give the perspective of the daughter.

Ha ha. You can count the dog. I understand well as my sister, too, has a dog and she talks about him in the same manner that I talk about the children. lol.
Ah, June 10th…yes, ofcourse I remember. Because she and I are Geminis and you and Akanksha are Taureans. Remember we spoke of it?

I do, a little, but I don’t remember your date. For sure my dog almost never goes anywhere without me. Amore is thinking of finding a good college for him. 😀
