Thursday Doors 07.11.24: Angkor Wat’s exotic doorways

Today, I have a few pictures of doorways in Angkor Wat’s temples.

Banteay Srei temple is made from red sandstone (which can be carved as easily as wood) and is believed to have been carved by women because of the intricate work.
Notice the many doorways that lead to the inside of the Preah Khan temple and the beautiful bas relief work done on the columns and the carving on the top of the doorway
Another closed door inside the main doorway of the Banteay Samre Temple
That thing crawling out of the Ta Prohm temple doorway on the floor is the root of a tree.
See the elaborate work on top of this doorway to a Buddhist monastery
Entrance to Banteay Kdei Temple

Notice the reclining Buddha behind the closed gate and the offerings kept in front? This is in the topmost tower of the Angkor Wat Temple
Door to the restaurant in the American Club in Dhaka. I love how the bougainvillea droops over the door.

That’s all the doors I have for today. This post is part of the Thursday Doors challenge. Wishing all of you a fabulous weekend.

Hi Darlene, I’m so glad to hear you say that. I figured they deserved a, post of their own.
Oh yes, there’s a lot of history, politics, religion in those doors. They changed many hands and went through a lot of destruction because of the different faiths of those who ruled, yet, they stand.

    Excellent photos

Thank you so much, Sadje. It’s amazing how they covered every inch of the walls with carving. The parts that seen blank are only because of the forces of nature.

You’re welcome. These relics of the past remind us of the commitment of those people

        1. Smitha V Avatar

You’re so right, Sadje. They did all of this with bare hands and basic tools.
