A walk at dawn…

It’s the time of the year again when you wish the days were longer and you did not have to be at work, the time of the year when the birds that went away for the summers have returned, when the flowers are in full bloom, when the warm sunshine is welcome for it gently warms and does not threaten to scorch, when a hot mug of coffee in the outdoors as a cool wind blows makes you thank God for the little things in life that are priceless. Am re-blogging a poem I had written last year, same time. Thankfully, some things have not changed over the last 1 year and hopefully do not change over time to come…the beauty of nature.

I step out of the cozy warmth of the indoors,

Into the dark, at the break of dawn,

A wisp of the chill, morning breeze, caresses my face,

And brings with it, a myriad sensations-

The smell of the still damp earth,

The sweet, sharp scents of the Champa and the Jatropha,

So fresh,so pure, so raw…

I tread carefully onto the pavement,

Covered with pink and red flowers of the bougainvillea and Gulmohar ,

Hands warm in my pockets,  I begin my morning walk…

At the end of the little lane, I take a turn,

And come upon a patch of dew-drop kissed green,

Where white spider-lilies line the pavement,

And yellow street lamps warmly glow,

A empty yellow school bus passes by, it’s lights gleaming,

A brown, furry cat watches on, undisturbed by my entrance,

The newspaper boy cycles past, breaking the silence,

The buzzing sound of the crickets and cicadas, continuing…

In the distance…

Your poem is exactly what we need this winter, Smitha. Makes me smile. I had been out in the sun for the better part of today and was amazed that even afternoons can be this beautiful in a desert.

Yes😊…it’s beautiful isn’t it. Hate that I have to be stuck in office when it’s so amazing outside. Being in the same desert, your appreciation is a delight. It means the poem came out just right. Thank you so much Pranitha.

I share your thoughts too! And today with the rains, I dunno what to say… I know the roads are a rage with slow- moving traffic but I simply cannot dent that this desert is simply awesome at the moment😃
