The (optional, as always) prompt for the day is taken from one of the prompts that Kwoya Fagin Maples suggests in here interview: a poem that addresses the future, answering the questions “What does y(our) future provide? What is your future state of mind? If you are a citizen of the “union” that is your body, what is your future “state of the union” address?”
The prompt for today was a wake-up call. If I had to give an address to my future body – the “state of the union”, I better be in a position to give it, looking straight in the eye. Which would mean that I would need to love, respect and care for the ‘union’ so that there is neither regret not remorse in future. This challenge kind of makes you accountable to your body.
To all my readers, it’s one of those challenges, you could try yourselves too.
Address to the Future “State of the Union”
It is an honor and a privilege
To stand before you today.
I apologize for the sacrilege
done. Youth and ignorance, obstacles on the way…
But You, “the union” stood its ground
And for that You have my gratitude, abound.
The faith in this “Union”, not mine alone
Your strength and courage is widely known
You deserve all the respect
For your stronghold, despite, the not-so-perfect
checkered past. Grave choices made
where more often than not, no heed was paid
to the tell-tale signs…
Over extraction of the blessed mines,
causing a slow depletion,
guaranteeing degradation.
This “Union” however did neither break,
nor shake.
For the strength displayed, in that not-so-distant past
and the changes made for a future that may last,
for the journey so far, I thank
the ” State of the Union”. Coming days, let’s be frank
there will be issues; not because we haven’t cared enough but because of age… realistically
but we hope and pray that the curtains will be drawn (on us) graciously
Once our job here is done
Strong live the “State of the Union!”
