Today’s challenge is to write a poem in which the words or meaning of a familiar phrase get up-ended. For example, if you chose the phrase “A stitch in time saves nine,” you might reverse that into something like: “a broken thread; I’m late, so many lost.” Or “It’s raining cats and dogs” might prompt the phrase “Snakes and lizards evaporate into the sky.” Those are both rather haunting, strange images, and exploring them could provide you with an equally haunting, strange poem (or a funny one!)
For today’s prompt, I chose the phrase, “This Far.No Further” and will use it as “Enough! No More.” . I write this in the light of the recent happenings all over the world- violence against children and women. The #Metoo campaign sparked a new wave where those who had been assaulted could come out and talk about it and bring the perpetrators of crime to book. But this campaign was for those who survived the ordeal. What about those who lose their life in the process of violence? Do we need to start a new campaign #shetoo or #hetoo so that the criminals are aptly punished? The law needs to be changed, not only in India but all over the world to befittingly punish those who violate other people’s rights. Rapes, acid attacks, molestation, domestic violence are equal to murder and should be treated similarly. An increase in these cases clearly indicates that something’s not working. Too many gray areas allows criminals to escape. We need to have a clear law in black and white.
