A steady, soothing zephyr… lulls the quiet night,
In our blankets we lay huddled; eyes shut tight,
Breaks the still silence, the sound of the temple gong,
One, Two, Three…Awaken the Gods; before daybreak comes along…
Stir the crows and the mynas; the woodpeckers in the trees,
The hum of the cicadas, the crickets, the mantis begin to cease,
Rustle the leaves of the nutmeg, outside the bedroom window,
Raindrops glisten, revealing the colors of the rainbow…
I step into the terraced patio, in a silken gown,
And behold, the waking earth, all the creatures down,
A squirrel- hurriedly, scampers over a hanging cluster,
Unripe bananas, green; discontent, scurries away in a fluster…
Three white butterflies flit by; flutter my drowsy eyelids,
Their dainty wings flap; dancing petals of snowy orchids,
The curtain of darkness lifts, unveils a promising new dawn,
Resonates thro’ every branch, every blade of grass in the lawn…
‘Suprabatham’… a hymn, a song, a prayer welcomes the blessed morn’,
Fills the air, reverberates in every cell, my spirits soar… the night has gone,
Hopes renewed, dreams held close, another day- the gift of life,
I cherish, I promise…to not let it wither away in anguish or strife…
