Art: Trust there’s someone Watching over you

From Crow’s Elephant Totem Song by Ted Hughes

“And the elephant sings deep in the forest-maze
About a star of deathless and painless peace
But no astronomer can find where it is.”

I painted this watercolor last week based on a painting by Ellen Fanan which I saw on Instagram. There was just something about it that drew me to it. After scrolling through hundreds of images on Instagram and Pinterest I returned to this picture. It’s my first attempt at painting an animal. I think though elephants are easier to paint than most other four-legged creatures. I’ve done the painting on a A4 sized watercolor paper using ‘Camlin’ watercolor paints.

As per my daughter’s advice I’m adding below a close-up of the elephant’s face. What do you think about the painting?

Someone who saw my painting asked me why I had painted the elephant blue in color. Incase you have the same question, this is the answer for painting it in blue. For one, its art- a medium that allows you to step away from reality. As long as a picture is beautiful, I think its fine and luckily beauty is subjective (remember the quote, ‘beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder’?) 😉

Secondly, and on a more serious note, displaying a ‘blue’ elephant shows that you care for the wellness of others and demonstrates that this is a safe place to talk about mental illness without fear of being viewed differently. The ‘Blue elephant’ in the room is a national anti-stigma campaign designed to address the stigma associated with mental illness.

Lastly, as per astrology (I read on the net), a blue elephant signifies brightness and knowledge.

To all my readers, I have a request- please suggest a name for this painting in the comments section. I have racked my brain and I can’t seem to find an appropriate name for it.

I end this post with the below quote from the net-

Beautiful Smitha. In the close up of the elephant’s eyes there is such a moving sense of connection. And the colour doesn’t seem unusual at all to me.

Thank you so much Jude. I believe art like beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. It’s subjective. If you like it you just do. If you don’t, you don’t. Hope you’re doing well.

So so happy to see your paintings! And I don’t think a blue elephant is unusual at all. In watercolor, I usually mix my gray from a blue and some other orangey color, so my eye always sees the blue in gray, even if it’s a warm gray. Thanks for the mental health message as well. Depression lurks at every turn here due to politics and pandemic in the USA. Many of us are struggling to keep ourselves in balance.

I am so drawn to the eyes of the elephant in your painting. You have given this one a heart and a soul, I can feel the emotion. I loved knowing that you chose blue as it shows care for the animal – I could sense your love and care in creating this. “Soft Heart of a Giant Soul”

Thank you so much Pragalbha. Honestly, it came alive on its own. I love how the eyes came too- wise, kind and concerned. I love the name you’ve suggested- its simple and yet explains the painting. Thank you!

I love this elephant picture, Smitha. Elephants are grey so blue isn’t that far off colourwise. It certainly didn’t bother me. Your proportions are excellent.

Thank you so much Robbie. I was pretty surprised when someone on the building what’s app group sent me a private message asking me why the elephant was blue🙂. I hadn’t thought of it earlier myself.

Oh…is it because of your dad or the lockdown or what’s happening in the US? Lynn, if its because of your dad, please take care of yourself. Being a caregiver is not easy. Hugs to you.

What a talented human being you are, Smitha. Based on your explanation of the blue elephant, I suggest the name: “Gigantic Relief for a Heavy Heart”
