With enormous gates and a lot of security at buildings and homes in Gulshan, this is as far as I’ll be able to go in the area. Therefore, I’ve decided to name the series as ‘Gulshan’s gates’ rather than ‘ Dhaka doors’.

Gulshan is a planned model town that was founded in 1961. The Gulshan Thana or district comprises an area of around 59 kms and includes other model towns like Baridhara and Banani. With beautiful, well-marked roads lined with trees on either side, walking here is fun. Each street and apartment/ home has a number – there is no way you can get lost. While it was a purely residential area in the beginning, now the place is home to offices of international companies like P&G, Nokia, Siemens, Reckitt, Mahindra & Mahindra, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Jotun etc. In addition, it’s also where the embassies of all countries are located. So, flags of various countries, high walls and heavily guarded areas is a common sight. But, it does not mean that the place is quiet. Gulshan also has schools, hospitals, cafes, restaurants, parks, stores ( few in number) and the local markets. The best thing is it’s all within walking distance. In fact, it’s easier to walk to a place here between 9.00 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. onwards, than go by car. As there are just two main roads and other lanes leading to and from it, all internal lanes tend to get blocked during the peak time (which feels like most of the time on weekdays- that is Sunday to Thursday) with people trying to find a way to reach home as quickly as possible.

This week, I’ve got pictures of gates in and around road number, 95. If you notice, you’ll see pictures of gates with geometric patterns. I hadn’t planned on it, but I quite like that it ended up following a certain pattern. So, I’m thinking every week I’ll try and collect pictures of gates that can be grouped together. I think having a limitation, like a color or a shape) will make it more fun for me .

With limited things to do here, this is my way of finding avenues for entertainment. It’s called, ‘Survival’. So, here’s presenting gates with geometric patterns on them.
