NaPoWriMo: Day 5 Where the Sky and Sea meet

NaPoWriMo Day 5’s challenge was to write a poem based on the natural world in honor of Mary Oliver’s work : it could be a particular plant, animal or natural landscape. But it should be a slice of the natural world that one has personally experienced and that one experiences often.

It was a perfect chance to write a poem on the sea-side resort that I get away to every quarter or six months; to charge my cells and unburden myself. Going away from it all- work, home, the city, even if it’s just for a short while, never fails to work wonders allowing my spirits to soar again.

Away from where I live,

The city, the buildings, the trails,

Off the beaten path, I escape,

My soul to nourish, My mind to clear.

For the wind in my hair,

And the salt in my face,

Sunshine and sea-breeze,

Revives my senses, restores and renews…

I take off my shoes,

My throbbing feet weary,

The sand, cool and soft,

Tingles my toes, snugly comforts,

I walk towards the water’s edge,

My heart rejoices,

The sea, calm and mild,

A rhythmic lull, soothes and settles,

The beach, a polished mirror,

Broken sea-shells, glistening pebbles, my footprints fresh,

The sun’s rays glinting, glowing and gentle,

Warms my spirits, lovingly heals,

The waters, shimmering and cool,

Salve my aching soles,

The waves playful, touch and go,

My sleeping nerves’ awakens and ignites,

I stare into the distance,

As far as my eyes can see,

The sea endless deep, a million secrets beholds,

Washing away my strains, sets me free,

There far, far away, my baggage gone,

Over the waves, Over the horizon,

Now I see it, now I don’t…

I turn around for I must now return…
