Friday Fun : Art- Sunlight

I’m joining in the Friday Fun challenge Colors today. Truth be told, I opened my laptop today wondering what to write about. There are so many things that I want to talk about but today I wanted to keep it light. So I put a search on my ‘Reader’ list and said ‘Friday.’ Out came all the challenges- Friday fictioneers, Friday flowers, Friday fun and there were many others equally interesting. But I decided to go with ‘Colors.’

Paints and painting has kept me busy since the beginning of the lockdown last year. That’s when I started painting- testing and trying, messing up sometimes and ending up victorious at others. As travel was banned I began painting a series called, ‘Places I wish to visit.’ It helped keeping my mind off the fact that we couldn’t travel. I did around ten paintings and when the lockdown carried on and I couldn’t keep dreaming, I moved on to Nature- what I could see from my window and in the building garden. The world of colors has been amazing so far. Everyday I learn something new, I realize how little I have observed the things around me – the curve of branches, the angle of the steering wheel, the transparency of petals. The more I learn the more I realize how much more is there to learn. A lifetime seems insufficient.

One year down the line and I remain hooked to the learning. I suppose that is what is meant by passion and I’m fortunate to have found mine after 45. The best thing about this newfound passion is that its earning too. Not as much as the bank job I spent my life doing but this doesn’t even feel like work.

As part of today’s challenge, I’m sharing a watercolor painting that I did recently on a A4 size paper and was picked up almost as soon as I shared it on a chat group. The painting is inspired by a painting by Beni Gassenbauer.

Sunlight- When the sun’s rays fall over anything, they make the most ordinary thing look beautiful

Since the person who bought the painting also wanted a bigger size of the same painting, I did it again on a A3 size paper. I realized how much I dislike doing the same painting again and no matter how hard you try, you can’t paint it exactly the same (or maybe its just me). I thought this discomfort was unique to me but a recent conversation with a WordPress blogger revealed that artists are of two types- one who can paint the same thing over and over again and those who can’t. I don’t care if its a proven fact or not. Knowing it made me feel better. Thank you, Mick for sharing this with me.

Here is a picture of how the painting would look in a frame

Lovely! And great that you are able to sell the fruits of your passion (and repeat them at request!).

Thank you! Its so good to read your comments. It was tough repeating it. I’m glad it turned out as required. And yes, it’s wonderful that someone wanted to buy it. I hadn’t started painting with the idea of selling my artwork. I feel blessed when it happens.

It’s beautiful Smitha and the colours are definitely vibrant! I think I probably fall into the not wanting to paint it again category – once it’s out there, it’s out there!

Thank you Andrea! It’s great to know I’m not alone in the way I feel about painting the same thing again. I thought I had a problem :).
