NaPoWriMo Day 28 – Do you have dreams?

Our prompt today (optional, as always), is to write a poem that poses a series of questions. The questions could be a mix of the serious (“What is the meaning of life?”) and humorous (“What’s the deal with cats knocking things off tables?”), the interruptive (“Could you repeat that?”) and the conversational (“Are those peanuts? Can I have some?”). You can choose to answer them – or just let the questions keep building up, creating a poem that asks the reader to come up with their own answer(s).

Do you have dreams?
(I don't mean 'goals', I mean the ones you see when you're asleep)
Do you think they're real?
Do you believe your mind's playing games?
Do you shrug it off as a concoction of a tired brain?
Do you think it's because you've slept well?

When you get a dream that scares you-
Do you see it as a sign-
Does it worry you endlessly?
Do you wait for something tragic to happen-
Like being hit by a car at the crossroad?
Or do you think you'll trip over a cat and break your head?

Have you wondered what they mean?
Like when you see a snake, does it the future portend?
Is it a reminder to offer milk to the snake God in the temple?
Or is it an awakening of your kundalini*-
A harbinger for spiritual growth?
Or is it the snake in the garden of Eden**?

When you see someone you loved and lost-
Are they paying you a visit from the other world?
If you see them smiling does it mean they're at peace?
Are they telling you they're happy to meet you again?
Or is it your guilty subconscious working after working hours-
Creating a fabricated lie or just wishful thinking?

Do you have dreams?
What do you make of them?
Do you see them with your eyes open or closed?
Tell me, I want to know.

Kundalini*- a energy form that bases your whole body, starts from the base of your spine and spirals to the crown of your head, ultimately escaping to the beyond.
Garden of Eden**-Biblical earthly paradise where Eve is tempted by the snake to taste the forbidden fruit

To all those who read this poem, would appreciate you answering any or all of the above questions. Let’s talk.

Hi Smitha, congratulations on your wonderful achievement with this poem. I don’t often dream, but when I do they it is always disturbing and I often wake up feeling anxious and worried.

Hi Robbie, Thank you so much for your good wishes.
It’s the same for me when I dream which is occasionally. Except sometimes I see dad and those are the times I wake up happy.
Thank you for sharing your experience with dreams, with me.

I like the way you started and ended with the dreams and then wove in those big questions – a poem that works just in terms of a satisfying read but also as something to make us think.

Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed reading it. Its nice to know what you found interesting about it.
It was my first experience with a question poem. I enjoyed writing it. Its funny how the questions remain and yet the poem is complete.

The feature is so well-deserved dear! I feel a kind of deja-vu. I dream a lot whenever I sleep – A LOT! I do have half-asleep dreams too and some dreams are so REAL! I don’t remember all of it but there are some images that stays like they are etched. I do have a strong intuition too and that reflects in some dreams I feel.
Sorry for your loss, Smitha. xo

Thank you so much Deepa for thinking so. A lot of people seem to be telling me they dream a lot. When I asked the questions I didn’t expect so many people to respond in the affirmative. Again, you are a very creative person. I’ve seen your art. I suppose that speaks for your intuition too. Thanks Deepa. Losing dad was/is a huge blow though I know it’s the ultimate truth. Am living the truth. Hugs.

Hey. Wonderful poetry. And well deserved feature today. Yay! Wonderful. You rock.
I dream. At night and during the day.
At night I see images of all kinds of things and people. Many times people I do NOT know. Those are weird. They stay with me and evaporate after I send them away with a prayer.
During the day, more than see, I feel the presence of them. Them: people I have known, but gone now. I pay attention. I often feel they’re trying to relay messages intended for their families. I light a candle for a few minutes and often inquire over their well being. Directly or indirectly. And my job is done.
I like dreaming and feel it’s a window into another dimension. You? How is it for you?
Keep dreaming. Be well I wish you miracles.

Thanks so much Selma. As always your comment made me smile a happy smile.
You must have a very strong sixth sense to dream so clearly and remember your dreams. I just dream about my dad these days since I lost him merely five months ago.
Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I find it intriguing that you feel them- those that have gone- even in the day. It requires a heightened spirituality I think to feel them.
Thank you for wishing me miracles. I wish the same for you. Do take care.

        Be well. Sweet one.
Lost your Dad barely 5 months ago. Sorry to hear. Talk to him. He can hear you and see him reply to you somehow.
Be alert. He talks. He’s still there.
        Be well, sweet one.

I feel his presence Selma and I keep telling him how much I love him everytime I pass his picture on the wall. I think he worked his magic and got me featured too :). He visits me in my dreams. Thank you for your comforting words. I will take your advice and be alert ❤

So many good questions. Great poem! Congratulations on being featured 🙂
I’ve had dreams, some with eyes open. These ones are usually scary, especially when they come true (like my BF’s son having a ski accident 3 days after I had the dream).
I usually don’t remember my dreams, but the very vivid ones that I remember are often strange, and I try to figure out what they mean, because there is obviously something hidden behind them, that my subconscious was trying to tell me. I’ve had a couple really crazy ones, where my ex featured (and you know it’s not a good thing when he’s a featured actor in a dream, it’s a nightmare more than a dream). One of my readers is really good at helping me interpret them. I’m grateful for that.

Thank you so much again🙂. I know how it feels to get a scary dream that ends up true. I’ve experienced it with dad. But your experience with the ski accident dream is really something. Did you see it as a ski accident or as something else?
I think the mind plays games if you’ve been thinking a lot about something like in the case of your ex. I hope you are able to heal and get rid of him completely from your head. Thank you discussing your experience with dreams Dawns. I’m glad you wrote back.🙂

I have many children with my ex, so getting him out of my head is difficult. At least for a few more years. But I must say that he is less and less present, and I’m glad for it.

As for the ski accident: I knew my BF was going skiing with his children (whom I had and still have never met). I saw his son as having a bad ski accident. A few days later, after not having heard from my BF for a while, I finally get some news. He had been busy, because his son had a bad fall while skiing (like a 10′ fall) and had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital. Thankfully, everything was fine in the end, his son is fine. But I did see him as having a ski accident, and that’s what happened. That’s why it was scary. It was the first time, and I didn’t want to bring the evil eye onto them, so I didn’t tell them. Still, it happened. :/
If you want to read about my weird dream, search my blog with the dream tag, you may be lucky and find the one with the spinach leaves 😉

Congratulations on Featured poem, lovely to read how much this meant to you today. Love the invitation to answer one of the questions here.
If you see them smiling does it mean they’re at peace?
It means your heart is at peace for/with them.

    1. Smitha V Avatar

Thank you so much Nina. This was a very, very big deal for me. I’m so glad you enjoyed the poem. Thank you for answering that question for me. I like that perspective of ‘your heart being at peace with/for them.’
      Thank you for the follow.

How wonderful that your valuable questions in the dream poem got you featured today! Congratulations!

I’ve been asking myself similar ones too, just like everybody, I suppose. I dream and often remember my dreams. At times I had lucid dreams and then they came true. But knowing in advance that your team will lose an important basketball match by 9 points is not really joyful. :p You are angry twice! 😉

I guess our life is lived in order to answer these questions. Much luck with that.

    1. Smitha V Avatar

I know! It’s like a dream come true (one that I saw with open eyes). Thank you so much.

Wow! You sound like a super intuitive person. I bet it must be fun knowing something good is coming your way…except for the waiting and if it’s something bad…like you said, who wants to live it twice. 😀
